Hair Color Wax 101 - Safe way to Dye Black Hair

Mar 05, 2021 08:00AM ● By Boitumelo Masihleho

Hair color wax has become increasingly popular over the last year, and can be seen trending across social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube. Hair color wax is a temporary hair color dye that doesn’t contain harsh ingredients like ammonia. It allows you to change your hair color within a matter of days without damaging your curls and coils.

Hair color wax is usually made up of three ingredients: beeswax, petroleum jelly, and temporary pigment. There’s no need to mix and develop, as the wax is ready to apply to your hair right of the jar. Popular brands of hair color wax are Mofajang Hair Color Wax, Hailicare Unicorn Purple Hair Wax, and ALEXIA & CO Japanese Color Hair.

Hair color wax is easy to apply. You simply section your hair and (using gloves) apply the wax. Coarse hair will require more wax, but it’s essential that you apply even coverage to achieve the color you want. Over-applying can cause flaking, but can be prevented with the right level of application. The color possibilities are endless with blue, pink, purple, gold, grey, and green options.

It’s important to apply the wax on freshly washed and conditioned hair. Hair color wax sits on the surface of the hair, so it will last until the next time your hair is washed. Therefore, you may want to use a pre-shampoo to loosen up any build-up of other haircare products you used on natural hair. Crown Paint Colors is a brand of hair color wax that is best applied to dry hair. It's similar to hair paint wax, but instead of a beeswax base, this paint is cream-based.

Hair color wax offers a simple, temporary way to try on new hair colors without the potentially damaging effects of traditional hair color dyes, so if you're curious about it, give it a try. Watch this video below before trying it out.
