Brown is the New Black for 2021

Mar 10, 2021 08:00AM ● By Boitumelo Masihleho

Black will never go out of style. But, for 2021, it’s stepping aside to make way for brown. Various shades of brown have been stealing the spotlight in the fashion industry. From streetwear to high couture, brown is the go-to color for many designers. Google searches for one of fashion’s most coveted clothing items, The North Face Puffer, in brown, has increased by a massive 1,950%.

From rich cocoa, to sandy beige, and everything in between, the trend has infiltrated social media, with celebrities, influencers, trendy millennials, and Gen Zs showing off their best brown outfits on social media. The increasing demand for sustainable and more natural fashion has created an opportunity for brown's neutral tone to return to the shops.

Streetwear is an easy way to wear this new trend. Beyoncé’s latest IVY PARK range features a brown collection with a mini skirt, an oversized unisex jacket, and baggy pants. Brown has also infiltrated the sneaker industry with a variety of stylish brown sneakers in a number of shades.

LBD has always been known to stand for Little Black Dress, but now it also can stand for Little/Long Brown Dress. Various fashion brands are selling brown, short, or long dresses in various styles. One of the most popular styles is the figure-hugging, ruched, brown dresses in a range of materials from soft knit to luxurious silk. It is as chic as the black dress but less predictable.

Brown suits everyone, whether you’re wearing a statement winter coat, or blazer, or LBD. But, if you’re still not sure how to incorporate this trendy color in your closet, try accessories. Brands like Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and Gucci are well-known for their monogram accessories that come in various shades of brown, but you can get affordable brown bags from online stores like Shein. Brown scarves, wide-brimmed hats, or shawls are also a great way to incorporate this trendy color in your winter wardrobe. Before you know it, you’ll be head-to-toe in your favourite shade of brown.
