Spooky season is upon us and there’s no more appropriate time of the year to listen to or watch a chilling true crime case on a podcast or YouTube channel. Podcasts have become a growing interest among true crime lovers in recent years. The same goes for YouTube, with more creators recounting the backstory of solved and unsolved true crime cases.

Sadly, there are only a few Black-owned true crime podcasts and YouTube channels, showing that this is a space that needs more inclusivity and diversity. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite Black-owned true crime podcasts and YouTube channels to listen to this Halloween.

Scam Goddess (Podcast)

When people hear true crime, they usually think of murders and abductions, but fraud and money laundering schemes are still criminal offenses. Tune in to Scam Goddess to hear the storytelling of comedian, Laci Mosley, as she shares all things fraudulent and those who practice it. Laci and her comedic guest host for that week share stories of scams and historic hoodwinks giving you a classic true-crime tale without the death.

Brittney Vaughn (YouTube Channel)

Brittney Vaughn is a YouTube star known for posting true crime stories, makeup tutorials, and beauty videos. Her channel has gained over 18 million views and more than 158 000 subscribers. She attended the University of Memphis where she studied psychology. Affirmative Murder (Podcast)

Affirmative Murder is the podcast trying to bring equality along with comedy to true crime. It’s hosted by best friends of more than 11 years Alvin Williams and Francel Evans. “We noticed that although we loved these podcasts, there was no perspective like ours present in the genre, 20 something millennial Black dudes who are very interested in true crime, but are far from experts,” said Williams in an interview.

Tshego Paledi (YouTube Channel)

Tshego Paledi’s Telling The Told and Untold true-crime channel is centered around solved/unsolved cases specifically from South Africa. Paledi sits in front of her camera to narrate and dive into details around murder cases, missing persons, serial killers, and massacres, also showing archival footage from most of those crimes.  “I’ve always been interested in crime whether it’s listening to podcasts or watching documentaries, YouTubers, or series,” said Paledi in an interview. “I noticed that they wouldn’t cover South Africa and that there weren’t any SA true crime YouTubers either. I just thought it would be something new and different for SA Youtube.

Bruh Issa Murder (Podcast)

Bruh Issa Murder is hosted by Andre Matthews, his black cat, Hex, and his friend, Battle. They cover true crime cases of color and play music from little-known artists at the end of each episode. Andre’s interest in true crime was started by the unfortunate murder of his cousin. He also began his podcast because of a lack of diversity, and seeing/hearing people like himself in the true crime community.
