The world of work took on a new form of flexibility for businesses. Online conferencing platforms such as Zoom became a popular means for businesses to continue to stay in touch and meet their customers’ demands.

While many were required to stay indoors and work from home, the situation provided an opportunity for individuals with certain skills to sell their services to companies looking to meet a yawning need within their organizations.

This created the gig economy or what can also be referred to as the world of freelancing or on-demand economy.

The gig economy is a form of work where people can choose their projects and have flexible working hours. With this new type of work, which is based on contract or project-based engagements, the traditional mode of employment no longer takes precedence as people can discover new ways of earning a living.

The gig economy has been well-established in the US and Europe, but it has just begun to acquire significant traction in Africa.

In Africa, traditional employment models in some countries mean working long hours at one particular job and being paid at specific dates by the late end of the month. This places a considerable strain on the financial capacity of individuals with responsibilities and commitments.

The gig economy on the other hand offers flexibility which is one of its major benefits and this opens up opportunities to take up job-projects that would not hamper the individuals’ personal and professional lives. It also allows people the freedom to work from remote or rural locations without the burden of relocating to the cities.

With the rapid growth in internet penetration and technology, the tools needed to thrive in the gig economy are now available at the fingertips of African Freelancers. An expanding mobile network platform, affordable smartphones, and steady internet connections mean more and more Africans can easily access platforms such as Fiverr, Upwork, and other freelance platforms to market their skills and be connected to different clients all around the world.

This connectivity also allows individuals to skill up to meet the growing demands of the market. Platforms like Udemy and Skillshop amongst others provide knowledge for specific in-demand skills that freelancers in Africa can leverage thereby breaking down traditional employment barriers and providing their services globally.

With a young and rapidly growing population, many African countries are experiencing a youth bulge, and this in turn has created a situation where unemployment is on the rise. With millions of young people entering the job market every year, the gig economy is a sure way to get many young people engaged and earning a considerable income by utilizing their skills and talents.

The gig economy is also a catalyst for entrepreneurship. As freelancers continue to earn and build a clientele through projects they take up, they can seize the opportunity to start up their businesses and employ other freelancers. This not only impacts the job market, it also brings in innovation and economic growth.

With the world becoming more and more of a global village, African workers can now access work opportunities that are not limited by location or traditional employment models. With a global client base and an income that is not affected by the economy where the freelancer is domiciled, the flexibility of the gig economy allows freelancers to have more control over their work-life balance.

When harnessed fully, the gig economy has the potential to transform Africa.

Read also:

The first of these priorities is the staff. I personally and professionally support each team member because I believe that having the right people in the right roles sets the tone for CWF’s entire operation. When staff feel valued and respected, it positively influences and sets the culture and in turn, affects how we interact with the communities CWF serves.

Once a synergistic team is in place, the second priority is aligning all Campaign’s efforts with its mission and vision. These are not just words on a strategic document; they are the very compass by which we navigate our actions and evaluate progress. My role involves formulating strategies and identifying the necessary infrastructure and capacity to effectively meet Campaign’s goals.

The third priority is accountability and adaptability. While having plans and systems in place is crucial, it is equally important to assess their efficacy constantly. I always circle back to evaluate how well the strategies are being implemented and whether our actions yield the desired outcomes. This assessment is a feedback loop involving inputs from all organizational levels and helps us understand if things are panning out as planned or if there is a need for course correction.

To strengthen the team further, I have posted a Chief of Staff position on the CWF website under the Careers section. Please consider applying if Campaign’s mission resonates with you and you feel you can contribute to CWF’s cause. Alternatively, if you know someone who would be an asset to the team, I would appreciate you forwarding this opportunity to them.

My last take is an effective organization is not built in a day or by the efforts of a single person. It is everyone’s collective drive and commitment, guided by a well-defined set of priorities. At CWF, the triad of priorities—people, mission/vision, and accountability—ensures we stay true to the ultimate goal: serving the people. By building the right team, focusing on the mission and vision, and continually assessing the effectiveness, we aim to create a lasting impact on the individuals and families we serve.

Read also:

According to the African Development Bank, Africa is the most vulnerable continent to climate change impacts under all climate scenarios above 1.5 degrees Celsius. This is despite contributing to just 3% of total global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Being a continent with a high vulnerability to climate change and poor preparation for adaptation to climatic shocks, the need for sustainable practices has never been more urgent. Businesses in Africa, both small and big, need to tweak their practices to ensure environmental sustainability.

How African small businesses can adopt eco-friendly practices

In recent years, the global landscape of business has shifted towards sustainability and environmental consciousness. Businesses ranging from SMEs to corporate giants are working to lessen their impact on the environment. Some of Africa's biggest environmental challenges are water pollution, air pollution, and deforestation, which are mostly caused by human activities, biodiversity loss, and oil spills.

Small businesses may wonder what role they have to play in environmental sustainability and if their efforts truly matter on a global scale. Well it does, and here are some eco-friendly practices that can be adopted:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Small businesses should consider implementing a waste management program where recycled or upcycled materials are used for products or packaging. One way to achieve this is by encouraging customers to bring their reusable bags or containers.

Reduce energy consumption: One of the most popular eco-friendly initiatives for businesses is lowering energy usage. Small business owners can invest in renewable energy sources like solar panels. Solar energy is a more eco-friendly option and helps businesses to save money against rising electricity costs. Energy-efficient appliances and lighting are also another good option. Also, encourage employees to turn off lights when they leave a room, which will save energy and money.

Increase Work From Home Days: One of the steps small businesses can take to reduce their carbon footprint is providing more work flexibility. Working from home (WFH) at least once a week lowers the negative impact on the environment as it eliminates the need for a daily commute, which in turn reduces the amount of CO2 emissions each driver generates.

Read also:

Benefits of eco-friendly businesses

There are many reasons to run an eco-friendlier business. Not only does it benefit the environment, but it is also good for your business. The benefits include:

A healthier planet: Eco-friendly businesses contribute to reducing pollution and mitigating climate change which benefits society as a whole.

Saves cost: Switching to energy-efficient appliances such as LED lighting and turning off the lights after work can reduce utility bills. Also, waste reduction and recycling programs can lower disposal costs.

Tax incentives and business opportunities: Most businesses that implement eco-friendly practices enjoy government tax incentives or grants from investors.

Boosts the image of the brand: Customers are more likely to patronize you if you are offering eco-friendly products or services. Going green can do wonders for your brand’s image.

African small businesses that have integrated eco-friendly practices

Across the continent, many small businesses have embraced eco-friendly practices. One such success story comes from Nigeria, where a young lady, Adebimpe Oni, upcycles solid waste like old tires, bottles, and plastics into recycled furniture suitable for homes, offices, playgrounds, and studios. Her company, D’Rose Recycling, is addressing the challenge posed by the tons of plastics and tires that end up in the ocean every year, causing water pollution.

Another example is Richard Bbaale, a social entrepreneur from Uganda who founded BanaPads. The company uses banana pseudostem wastes, which are usually left to rot after harvesting, to produce affordable, eco-friendly sanitary pads.

There is also Mobisol promoting clean and renewable energy access.

Challenges African small businesses may encounter during their eco-friendly journey

Running an eco-friendly business is not an easy task. Despite its many benefits, African small businesses that embark on this journey face various challenges. One of such challenges is the initial cost. Small businesses may struggle with the capital to invest in new technologies, equipment, and materials.

Dealing with inadequate infrastructure is another challenge. Some African countries are still grappling with unreliable electricity and water supply, which can hinder the adoption of energy-saving or water-conservation technologies.

There is also the challenge of securing funding or loans for sustainability initiatives, as financial institutions may not be willing to invest in relatively unproven eco-friendly projects.

Small businesses may also lack access to the necessary expertise to guide them through the process of adopting eco-friendly practices.

The government’s role in promoting eco-friendly practices among small businesses

While African small businesses are stepping up their game and integrating eco-friendly practices into their operations, governments also have a crucial role to play. Here are some ways the government can help:

Policies and regulations: The government can implement a mix of policies and regulations stringent enough to ensure businesses comply with eco-friendly practices.

Financial support: The government can provide loans, grants, and other funding options for small businesses to invest in eco-friendly innovation.

Fund research: Investing in the development of eco-friendly technologies can make them more accessible and affordable for small businesses. The government can also fund research into sustainable practices and solutions.

International Agreements: Governments can participate in international agreements and treaties aimed at addressing global environmental challenges, such as climate change and biodiversity loss.

Eco-friendly business practices should be adopted by all as it not only help protect the environment but can also improve efficiency and reduce operational costs.

Read also:

Youth unemployment roughly double the rate of adults, with significant variation by country. The problem is not just unemployment but underemployment, which peaks at just over half of youth in the labor force in low-income countries”.

Between 2018 and 2022 the continent witnessed the emergence of more than 7600 startups across various regions of the continent with the major players being Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya. Within the same period, startups in Africa raised above $2 Billion USD, while in the first quarter of 2023, they were able to raise up to $3.1 Billion.

The World Bank estimates that African startups have the capacity of upwards of 22 million jobs in sub-Saharan Africa in 2030.

Read also:

However, understanding and overcoming supply chain challenges is crucial for the growth and sustainability of these businesses. In this blog, we'll explore some key insights and strategies that can help African SMEs navigate their unique supply chain challenges.

Understanding African Supply Chain Dynamics

Africa's diverse geography, infrastructure disparities, and political complexities create a unique environment for supply chain management. SMEs must understand the nuances of their specific regions and industries. Here are some factors to consider:

Infrastructure: Infrastructure gaps in many parts of Africa can lead to delays, higher costs, and increased risks in the supply chain. SMEs must assess the infrastructure situation in their operating regions and adapt their supply chain strategies accordingly.

Customs and Regulations: Varying businesses and regulatory requirements across African countries can create bottlenecks and administrative burdens. Staying informed and compliant is critical to successful cross-border trade.

Market Volatility: Political, economic, and environmental factors can lead to market volatility. SMEs should have contingency plans in place to address unexpected disruptions.

The Role of Technology

Technology can be a game-changer for African SMEs looking to optimize their supply chain. Here are a few ways technology can help:

Inventory Management: Implementing inventory management software can help SMEs minimize overstock or stockouts, reducing carrying costs and ensuring products are available when needed.

Supply Chain Visibility: Technology solutions like blockchain and IoT (Internet of Things) can provide real-time visibility into the supply chain, allowing SMEs to track their products, monitor conditions, and make informed decisions.

E-commerce and Digital Platforms: Leveraging e-commerce and digital platforms can expand the reach of African SMEs, helping them access new markets and customers.

Read also:

So much has happened in the last few weeks with prominent women in leadership positions that circle back on self-care issues. As the President and CEO of Campaign for Working Families, self-care is not a luxury but a necessity. The weight of leadership, especially in the non-profit sector, can be both exhilarating and exhausting. Add to that the societal pressures and expectations, such as the Glass Cliff syndrome affecting women in leadership, and the need for a self-care regime becomes not just a personal but a professional survival strategy.

My self-care regime is a carefully curated blend of the physical, emotional, and intellectual, designed to sustain me and, by extension, the organization I lead.

Physically, I prioritize exercise as a scheduled part of my day, starting at 4 AM. A healthy body is the vessel that carries the mind, and in the high-stakes world of non-profit leadership, a clear mind is your greatest asset.

Emotionally, I have learned the art of saying no. The desire to be everywhere and do everything is a common pitfall in leadership roles. The reality is that spreading oneself too thin is a disservice to you and the organization. Therefore, I have become judicious in what I commit to, ensuring each 'yes' aligns with both my personal well-being and the organization's goals. This selective commitment is not a sign of disengagement but my sense of focus.

Intellectually, I engage in what I call 'purposeful disconnection.' This involves stepping back from the daily grind to engage in activities that nourish the mind. It could be reading a book unrelated to work, attending a cultural event, or even engaging in a stimulating conversation that has nothing to do with budgets or grants. This intellectual escapism serves as a reset button, reinvigorating me with fresh perspectives I can bring back to my role.

Finally, I lean into my support network. Leadership can be a lonely journey, and the importance of having a trusted circle cannot be overstated. Whether it is family, friends, or mentors, these are the people who provide emotional sustenance, offering a listening ear, constructive criticism, or even a much-needed reality check.

In a world that often equates leadership with relentless hustle, especially for women navigating the complexities of societal expectations, self-care is my silent yet powerful form of rebellion. It is my way of saying that to lead others effectively, you must first know how to lead yourself. And leading oneself starts with the acknowledgment that you are a finite resource. This is the essence of my 3-pronged self-care regime, a holistic approach that serves as both my personal sanctuary and my professional fuel.

I welcome comments on your self-care steps…

Remember, you can support the Campaign for Working Families’ mission by signing up as a volunteer or checking our website (cwfphilly.org) for ways to collaborate.

Watch out for the chief of staff vacancy announcement.

Volunteer with us here

Apply as a Tax Associate Intern here

Read also:

My reflection starts with gratitude for the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals and families.

First, the cornerstone of any successful non-profit is its team. The notion that one can single-handedly steer the ship is a fallacy. The work is too expansive, and the challenges too intricate. Therefore, recruiting a team that resonates with the organization’s vision and mission is not just advisable; it’s imperative. These are the individuals who will breathe life into your programs, who will scour the landscape for grants, and who will be the scaffolding upon which your organization is built. Their skills and commitment are the lifeblood that nourishes the organization, making it robust and impactful.

However, the journey is not without its crucibles. There are moments when the heart and the head are at odds, each pulling in a different direction. In such instances, I’ve learned to lean towards my head. The reason is simple: we are stewards of public trust and resources. Our primary allegiance is to the service of the people we aim to help and build. Emotional decisions, while well-intentioned, can sometimes lead us astray from this cardinal principle.

Operational efficiency is another lesson that came into sharp focus. A non-profit is as effective as its structures and processes. Without these, even the most passionate team and the most altruistic intentions can flounder in a quagmire of inefficiency. Therefore, a significant portion of my time was invested in creating systems that streamline operations, making them more transparent and accountable.

Last, the importance of having a strong financial and legal framework cannot be overstated. A bank that knows you by name is not just a financial institution; it’s a partner in your journey. Similarly, a lawyer who guides your activities is your sentinel, guarding you against potential pitfalls and ensuring your actions comply with the law. These relationships are not mere formalities but strategic alliances that I leveraged to fortify CWF.

I invite you to support the Campaign for Working Families mission by signing up as a volunteer or checking our website for ways to collaborate. Watch out for the chief of staff vacancy announcement.

Volunteer with Campaign for Working Families!

Tax Associate Internship Position at Campaign for Working Families

Careers at Campaign for Working Families

Read also:

CWF PRESIDENT AND CEO REFLECTS ON HER FIRST TAX SEASON AND FUTURE

Campaign for Working Families (CWF) is a Philadelphia nonprofit that works to provide working families with access to finances through asset development, free tax preparation and resource... Read More »
