South Philadelphia’s Grammy-winning singer-producer James Mtume, who worked with legends Miles Davis, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, and Stephanie Mills, will get a street renamed after him in his old neighborhood. The late Mtume passed away in 2022 at age 76. He was the son of saxophonist Jimmy Heath. Mtume worked in the music industry, TV, radio, and films. He collaborated on the classics “The Closer I Get to You.” (Flack and Hathaway), and “Never Knew Love Like This Before” (Mills) -- and he enjoyed solo success with the top R&B hit, “Juicy Fruit “ in the 1980s. Mtume’s son, Faulu, led the efforts for the ceremonial street renaming. The Tugela River, which runs over the brink of the Drakensberg escarpment to generate the falls, is named for it. Tugela Falls is a renowned tourist attraction only a short stroll from the park's main gate. During the dry season, the falls are best observed when the water levels peak. Its name, "Tis Abay," translates to "Smoke Abay" in English. Positioned approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) downstream from Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, these falls have gained significant recognition as one of Ethiopia's most well-known tourist attractions. An interesting ecological consequence of the Blue Nile Falls is that they act as a natural barrier, isolating the unique ecosystem of Lake Tana from the rest of the Nile River's ecology. While Kalambo Falls is located in a remote area of Zambia, it remains a cherished destination for hikers and backpackers, albeit not a prominent one for mainstream tourism. For those seeking to glimpse the awe-inspiring magnificence of Kalambo Falls, the dry season is the ideal time to visit when water levels are at their peak. The falls emerge as a remarkable sight, surrounded by the verdant embrace of a lush rainforest. Now you need to arrive on time, most importantly and appropriately dressed. Your look needs to meet the celebratory occasion, and you want to make the couple happy that they chose you as a guest, and there’s no better wedding guest than a well-dressed one. Remember, video, photography, and social media addicts are always present. So here are a few tips that will support you in making the best choice.

Suppose the dress code says black tie - beautiful! Floor-length gowns or dressy pants suits and ankle-skimming black tie dresses, men must wear a dinner jacket with matching trousers, a lovely shirt, most often white, black formal shoes, and a bow tie. A black-tie dress code requires you to follow the rules, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with it.

Essentially, you want an elegant, simplistic, luxe look! Going to a wedding on the horizon that’s calling for cocktail attire? This dress code is one of the more playful, as cocktail dresses or pants sets are meant to be as fun as the “drinks on us” hour. In terms of dress length, you can go with midi and minidresses; it’s all in your swag that counts. Fabrics should be of a more substantial quality than a day dress, so consider silk jacquards, shimmering stretch jerseys, or pleated satins.

Men, please wear a jacket and tie, which are also required for cocktail attire. Fancy sneakers have become the rage, so wearing them will be accepted for cocktail/evening wedding footwear. Go with darker hues, burgundy, and black/browns in chillier months or for evening events, but feel free to wear lighter neutrals or cool blues in warmer weather or for daytime celebrations. Lastly, are you attending a classic Spring/Summer wedding in a garden or during the day? When selecting your look, ladies and gents think of floral patterns, soft and romantic hues, and overall loveliness. Your fabrics and outfit choices can be more relaxed, so poly blends and printed cotton will work so long as the fit is right.

If you’re headed someplace fabulous to witness your loved ones tie the knot. Destination wedding guest dresses are, hands-down, the most fun attire to shop for. Two-piece sets and pantsuits will work just as well. Whether you’re headed to a wedding in Mexico or on the Ghanaian Coast, the assignment is clear - dress like you’re on vacation. Color! Prints! Patterns! So long as you follow hemline requests from the couple (Black-tie or otherwise), this is the moment to be festive. Rule of thumb? Women can never, ever, ever wear white or wear an outfit that would upstage the bride or groom. Here are some pictorial ideas:

Black tie/Cocktail evening wear. These cultural conversations and inside jokes have resulted in new trends, digital behaviour and changes in the platform’s digital tools.

Elon Musk’s controversial ownership has led some to wonder – what happens to Black Twitter now, and where will it go?

These questions mourn the loss of a digital culture that has defined the platform over the past decade, but they also perpetuate the idea that the Black Twitter community is a singular entity, incapable of the kind of shapeshifting and remixing that has been central to its existence.

Though some of Black Twitter’s practices are often misunderstood to have originated on the social media platform, they are not new. They have histories in Black creative, linguistic, and technological cultures. For example, cancel culture performed on Black Twitter has roots in Black accountability practices and oral traditions, though it has now been appropriated.

These Black cultural and linguistic practices are not exclusive to Twitter. Twitter simply offers a digital space where these practices are exposed to people who were previously unfamiliar with them.

Similar Black cultural practices have also emerged on other social networking platforms that existed long before the emergence of Twitter in 2006, and so they certainly won’t disappear in light of Musk’s US$44 billion (£38 billion) buyout.

The Black cultural impact on the Twittersphere

Besides its cultural impact, Black Twitter has also had technological impacts on the platform.

In Reclaiming Our Space, Feminista Jones explores how Black women’s creative use of the app led to changes in the platform’s design. “Over the years,” she writes, “Black women have continued to tinker with Twitter as a platform, creating ways to communicate that are more in line with our norms. In response, Twitter has adapted its platform to how we tweet, from creating the current mechanism for threading to incorporating gifs in tweet options.”

The technological and cultural impact of Black Twitter doesn’t stop there. In her essay The Blackness of Meme Movement, Lauren Michele Jackson argues that popular meme culture is directly linked to Black language and expressive cultures. Their usage embodies Black cultural experiences and are shaped by them.

As Black folk shaped the platform (and culture) through digital play and communication, Twitter quickly became an incubator for Black cultural production. This caught the eyes of media and cultural industries who altered their marketing strategies after they noticed the profitability of Black Twitter’s “coolness”.

Memes, for example, quickly became an opportunity to increase the revenue of hip-hop music. Another example is live-tweeting, when Black Twitter gathers to respond in real-time to TV shows, such as Love Island, and offer comedic and political commentary on race, society and culture. Industries recognised the viewership this practice brought, and have changed how they market media and engage audiences.

Photo by Shawn Fields on Unsplash

Twitter as a space for anti-Black digital harm

Black experiences on Twitter aren’t always enjoyable. Twitter was never a haven for Black people on the internet.

The hyper-visibility of Blackness, Black cultures and Black expressions have become a digital currency resulting in cultural appropriation, blackfishing (in which non-Black people use makeup, cosmetic surgery or digital editing to flirt with the appearance of Blackness) and digital blackface (the use of visual depictions of Black people such as gifs, emojis, and memes as a form of self-expression by non-Black people).

Outsider surveillance has meant that Black Twitter has become a resource for misappropriation and creative theft, including when journalists mine Black Twitter to write articles and “discover” new trends, preventing Black creators from making money from their cultural production.

The lack of adequate regulation on Twitter also means that the threat of anti-Black abuse is amplified. This particularly affects those at the margin of the margins, such as Black women, queer people and trans people.

Many former contributors to Black Twitter have already left the app – often platforms that they have spent significant time building – and more will continue to do so. For all its greatness, Black Twitter is not a digital utopia, and many people have been deeply affected by the threat of harm on the platform, resulting in powerful engagements of digital resistance.

How will Black Twitter go?

Instead of asking, “What happens to Black Twitter now?”, I find it useful to ask, “How will Black Twitter go?”. Asking this acknowledges that there is a method to Black digital life – it is continuously being created and redefined. It also locates “Black Twitter” with the people and culture who carry it, and not only with the platform they inhabit.

While we collectively mourn the loss of a digital space that has represented culture, laughter, community and resistance, we need to remember that the platform has still perpetuated and circulated harm. Twitter cannot be the centre of all Black digital life. We must dream of better.

And so, “Black Twitter” will go as it always has done, in a fashion of cultural innovation, with our shared memories, collective archives and hopes for a better future.

Such is life on the internet. Social media and websites can disappear at any time. But if we must take one lesson, it is that while Twitter didn’t create Black Twitter, Black Twitter certainly defined and shaped Twitter.

Related articles:

It is known for its ballads and dance tunes. Its simple form, folk lyrics, and harmonies are accompanied by string instruments such as electric and acoustic guitars, steel guitars, banjos, fiddles, and harmonicas. Since its emergence in the early 20th century, traditional country music has been dominated by white performers and the listening audience’s demographic. Black artists have not let this deter them from making country music. They have been making awesome country music over the decades, making names for themselves while at it. Here are the 11 famous Black country singers to add to your music streaming platforms.

Lesley Riddle

Lesley Riddle was an African American musician who had an enormous impact on the beginnings of country music. Riddle was born in Burnsville, North Carolina. While he recovered from his right leg being amputated, he took up the guitar, developing an innovative picking and slide technique. Soon, he collaborated with other musicians from Sullivan and Scott counties, including Steve Tarter, Harry Gay, Brownie McGhee, and John Henry Lyons. Although Riddle has several studio recordings, he is best known for associating with the Carter Family. Giddens makes it her mission to bring to life the lost sounds of past slave cultures and African-American traditions in Appalachia and the South. She received several Grammy Awards and a MacArthur Fellowship, which join her impressive list of other honors in and out of the country music genre. Giddens plays fiddle and banjo and arranges much of the music she performs. His greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s when he was the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley. Pride started as a professional baseball player before his long-awaited career in music. His song, "Kiss an Angel Good Morning", was a mega-hit in the 70s and proceeded to release hit after hit well into the ’80s. He was among country music’s first black singers, plus the most iconic. He won the Entertainer of the Year award at the Country Music Association Awards in 1971 and a Grammy for “Best Country Vocal Performance, Male” in 1972. We all have mothers or mother figures who helped raise or nurture us, and May 14th, 2023, is a day to celebrate those champions among women!

Here at FunTimes, we have a specially curated list of five (5) ways you can appreciate and celebrate your African mother today:

Cook her favorite meal/dish

Image: East African pilau. Source: Wikimedia Commons

Food is a love language in African culture, with many conversations of care and love beginning with the phrase, ‘Have you eaten today?’ Many of the continent’s cuisines are rich in flavors and have a wide variety of delicious dishes; your mother will surely love one or two the most.

Show appreciation to your mother by cooking or ordering her favorite dish (extra points if you make it yourself). It will be a delightful surprise for her and a fantastic way to honor her heritage and culture.

Plan a family day out/in

African mums love when there is peace and harmony in their household between all the children and the parents. Despite our disputes with our loved ones, show your mother how much you all get along by planning a day out together to build memories. It could be a trip to the photographer to update the family portrait, a trip to her favorite place, or even an indoor home bonding session where you all share stories and show her appreciation. It will also encourage your mother to share stories from her childhood, family history, and memorable experiences. This will provide an opportunity for intergenerational connection and the passing down of cultural knowledge.

Learn a popular African social media trend!

Photo by cottonbro studio from Pexels

Social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram turn regular people into stars through their content. Your mother may not mind being a part of many funny, sweet, emotional, and entertaining trends on social media. Through these videos, you get to show the world how much you enjoy and appreciate your mother and allow your mother to bond with you over your hobby or budding career. Plus, even if the video is not successfully done, the bloopers will make for funny content and stories down the line.

Give her a day of relaxation and pampering

Mothers never really stop worrying about their children, families, and loved ones, so find a way to encourage your mother to de-stress and take a much-needed break. Find out if she prefers spas, massages, getaways, shopping sprees, etc., and once you know her favorite is to unwind, let her indulge in it today, and she will appreciate it. It is a reminder that she is worth rest as she needs it and deserves to be treated like a queen.

Support one of her causes/passions

A considerable number of African mothers do not just take on the needs of their children, but they tend to be very passionate in other areas. Be it a local community, a religious cause, another family, etc., you can pour into something else your mother is very enthusiastic about today. This gesture will go a long way to the people and organizations your mother supports, making her happy and contributing to positive change on the continent.

Read more from Kufre N.:

The day, established in 2011 to celebrate the role of jazz in “uniting peoples across the globe”, is now marked annually on 30 April in close to 200 nations. It would have been hosted by Cape Town in 2020 had COVID-19 not intervened.

Even so, many jazz lovers elsewhere may be aware of the long history and uniqueness of South Africa’s jazz legacy through only a few names – Miriam Makeba, Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela – who were driven out by apartheid to find world stages. Uncovering, documenting and showcasing more of the creativity that fought to flower inside the country remains a work in progress.

For writer and film-maker Calum MacNaughton of Cape Town-based Sharp-Flat Music, it’s vital work. He’s the archivist and curator of the historic As-Shams record label archive. MacNaughton told me, in an interview as part of my ongoing research into South African jazz histories, that he wants access to the archive not only for musicology researchers, but “enthusiasts and budding musicians in frivolous conversation late into the night”.

As-Shams has a 60-year history as South Africa’s first Black-owned record label, founded by music producer Rashid Vally out of a corner of his father’s Koh-i-Noor general store in central Johannesburg. As-Shams was responsible for an eclectic array of releases from the teenage township pop of the Beaters (who became Harari) to the iconic, implicitly subversive Mannenberg (Is Where its Happening) of Abdullah Ibrahim (then Dollar Brand).

As part of opening access, As-Shams recently released the first volume of a planned series of archival compilations covering the label’s history. As-Shams Archive Vol. 1: South African Jazz, Funk & Soul 1975-1982 contains 10 tracks, 10 original compositions and 10 ensembles. More than 90 minutes of music spans eight deeply repressive apartheid years. Yet, in those years artists of the calibre of pianists Lionel Pillay, Tete Mbambisa and Pat Matshikiza, saxophonists Kippie Moeketsi, Basil “Manenberg” Coetzee and Mike Makhalemele, and vocalist Sathima Bea Benjamin were making original, innovative music.

Related articles:

But curating its contents, says MacNaughton, provided the opportunity for a fresh approach, to shape new sequences reflecting professional networks and shared thematic concerns.

For example:

On the vinyl edition Side A is dedicated to the remarkable connection between Moeketsi and Matshikiza. Dick Khoza (as leader is heard) on the heels of his performance with Mbambisa’s big band, Black Disco’s Night Express and Pillay’s Deeper in Black are thematically linked. And the compilation closes with Benjamin’s music, which ties everything together with a spiritual thread.

There’s also what he calls an “11th hidden track”: artwork on the vinyl from South African painter and graphicist Hargreaves Ntukwana, often the label’s cover artist of choice.

This restructuring works: tracks have a wholly new impact when heard in fresh company, rather than embedded in their original albums. By avoiding the “obvious” choices – often the title tracks – the collection conveys the collective music-making of a community and an era, rather than fondly remembered jazz hits.

Restoring the archive

Yet the process of recovering what MacNaughton counts as “some of South Africa’s most important cultural artefacts of the 20th Century”, wasn’t without problems. Despite fears about degradation, the tapes had not been damaged by constant moving.

Rather, the problem was getting the history right, revealing the meticulous detective work that restoring South Africa’s hidden musical history demands. Though most tapes had been carefully annotated, recording engineers sometimes did not name all players, and occasionally the paper record of names was absent. Just one example from the compilation was McNaughton being “presented the challenge of identifying which of the three bassists and two drummers who share the album credit appear on the specific track. I reached out to bassist Lionel Beukes, who spent a weekend listening to the track only to conclude that he couldn’t say for certain.

In other cases, artists remained unidentified because of contractual commitments to other labels, or the imprint faced restrictions because of conflicting licensing and distribution deals.

Perhaps the most complex detection trail surrounded another As-Shams re-release: Pillay’s Shrimp Boats. That first appeared in 1987 when As-Shams resurrected its Mandla imprint to issue out-of-print titles. Multiple tracks were brought together to round out the length of an album, not all the performer credits travelled with them and the cover artwork omitted Pillay in favour of Coetzee.

Image: Cover art Lionel Pillay feat. Source: Instagram | As-Shams/The Sun Records

By pure happenstance, this writer played the resulting album to the late Robbie Jansen in Botswana in the late 1980s. "Hey,” the saxophonist said, “that’s me playing saxophone on Birdland! I always wondered what happened to that session …” Yet Jansen was not named on the sleeve. When I communicated this to MacNaughton after the 2022 re-release, he contacted everybody still living he could find who might have memories to confirm the attribution. Having confirmed it, the label put new information online.

MacNaughton is extremely sensitive about the responsibilities of any reissue – not only to artists, but also to music historians and the truth.

Why this matters

MacNaughton is still digging through the archives. A second compilation in preparation features, among others, guitarist Themba Mokoena, 70s fusion group Spirits Rejoice and saxophonist Winston “Mankunku” Ngozi. Full releases are planned for forgotten sessions by Mbambisa and Moeketsi.

Restoring these masterworks to the public domain can change our conversations about South African jazz. Instead of isolated stars, we hear a community at work: the rich musical conversations disrupting what has sometimes been characterised as a “silent” cultural period under apartheid. Conversing with each other, with overseas jazz and with tradition, those players made the music what it is today.
