His dribbling skills and moments of brilliance have been remembered by fans and pundits alike, cementing his place as one of the all-time greatest.

Let's look at one of Okocha's most famous dribbling moves - the nutmeg. For those unfamiliar with football terminology, a nutmeg is when a player passes the ball between an opponent's legs. It's considered a very bold move and one that requires great skill to execute.

Okocha's first iconic moment came with the German side Eintracht Frankfurt when he produced a sensational solo goal against Karlsruher SC in 1992. Picking up the ball just inside his half, Okocha ran at the Karlsruher defence before sliding the ball through the legs of one defender, nutmegging another, and slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to score a superb individual goal. Okocha would often use the nutmeg to get past defenders. He would lure them in by making them think he would pass the ball to them. They would lower their guard, and he would quickly pass it through their legs before they had time to react. This always resulted in huge roars from the crowd as they couldn't believe what they had just seen.

Another memorable moment came during Nigeria's World Cup campaign in 1994 when Okocha produced a brilliant piece of skill to bamboozle Greece's Stratos Apostolakis. Picking up the ball on the right wing, Okocha feigned to cross before quickly cutting inside and leaving Apostolakis on his backside. He then threaded a perfect pass into the path of Emmanuel Amuneke, who scored Nigeria's second goal in a 2-0 victory.

Finally, Okocha was famous for his trademark 'rainbow flick', a skill he used significantly during his spell with the Turkish side Fenerbahce. The move involves flicking the ball up over an opponent's head. Jay Jay Okocha was one of the most gifted dribblers of his generation. His footwork was so good that it often left defenders baffled. He could make the ball dance on the pitch and was a joy to watch.

But Okocha wasn't just about showboating and trying flashy tricks all the time. He was an excellent footballer who could have played for any team. His footwork was just one aspect of his game that made him so special.

Read '5 Famous African Soccer Players':

When we saw timeless characters from Disney films like Cinderella, Snow White, or Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, we would aspire to be just like them. However, as young Black girls, we were unable to identify any princesses who resembled us. My parents made a concerted effort to discover toys and television programs with Black representation because they believed it was important for me to recognize myself in the media I consumed. Many other Black families shared that same sentiment.

Princess Tiana became Disney's first Black princess in 2009 after that. The world was in a frenzy, but many Black families believed that because Princess Tiana spent most of the film as a frog, Disney had not made an honest effort to make a movie featuring a Black princess.

Anika Noni Rose, who voiced Tiana (Image Source: Wikimedia Commons)

Now, in 2022, we have not one, but two live-action movies with strong, deserving Black women. The news of this movie ignited 2022 and sparked numerous controversies, but most significantly, you noticed numerous Black parents posting on social media about how excited they and their kids are to witness a Black princess.

You would see negative comments on Twitter that read “Us white girls, who grew up with The Little Mermaid, deserve a true-to-color Ariel. Disney, you made a huge mistake by hiring Halle Bailey. This is going in the TRASH.” or “She may be your Ariel but not mine…” Although these comments are very negative the positive ones overpowered them. There were positive comments like “As a white-skinned redhead, I have very strong feelings about #TheLittleMermaid. Ariel changed my ginger world. The mean “jokes” ended. I became envious of my hair. And you know what? I want little Black girls to experience the same feeling with the new Ariel.” or “...I am so excited that POC (People of Color) will be able to share the joy of a princess that looks like them. You will be a gorgeous Ariel…” Despite the negative comments and with the help of the positive ones Bailey has stated that “it is still a dream come true”

Read 'Eight Barbies Made After Famous and Inspiring Black Women':
