It has delivered more imaginative and unique horror stories. Black voices and faces are underrepresented in the horror genre, both onscreen and in the director’s chair. Fortunately, the recent success of Xavier Burgin’s documentary, Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (2019)

has helped shine a spotlight on some of the high points of the genre.

Black people have contributed some absolute gems in horror whether working behind or in front of the camera. With Nope coming out July 22, an American science fiction horror film written, directed, and co-produced by Jordan Peele under his Monkeypaw Productions banner, we thought we look at more amazing Black horror films directed by Black directors both past and present.

Blacula (1972)

William Crain’s feature directorial debut was the iconic blaxploitation film Blacula starring William Marshall. Marshall played an African prince named Mamuwalde who is turned into a vampire against his will by Count Dracula and locked in a coffin for nearly 200 years. When he emerges, it is the 1970s and he has been transported to Los Angeles. The film was a box-office success and won the award for best horror film at the Saturn Awards. It also spawned a sequel, Scream Blacula Scream (1973), and inspired a wave of Black horror films in the 1970s.

Bones (2001)

American director, cinematographer, and screenwriter of film, television, and music videos, Ernest Dickerson’s Bones should be seen by every fan of the horror genre as it embodies everything fans love about the genre. Bones features a great story that carries some strong themes and depictions of drugs and corruption decimating in the Black community as well as some amazing practical effects that pay homage to various sub-genres of horror. It’s a true cult classic that shows some great direction from Dickerson and can’t miss performances from Snoop Dogg and Pam Grier. The true essence of Candyman is about the vilification of a Black man and the gentrification of a Black community, so it only made sense that the remake was placed in the hands of a Black woman. Nia DaCosta directed the slick remake and continued the themes of police brutality and racial injustice, which are still relevant today. It earned applause for the way it tackled the hard-hitting social topics while still giving us the gore and terror of the original Candyman from 1992.

Read more about the new Candyman:

Following a deadly car crash, which took his wife, he attempts to pick up the pieces of his photography career and provide care for his daughter Ava (Amanda Christine). When approached by a medical professional, Dr. Lilian Brooks (Phylicia Rashad), to do an experimental treatment, Norman expresses concerns about its boundary-pushing approach in regards to the subconscious. Once he signs on, Dr. Lilian attaches a neuron cap to his head, which allows the device to extract and transmit vital memories into a black box. Then, the contraption transforms hidden memories into virtual reality images. Black Box is a captivating dissection of the complexities in medical research, as well as what happens afterlife and the possibility of our subconscious living on.

Kuso (2017)

American record producer Flying Lotus (real name Steven Ellison) goes for broke with his 2017 feature film, Kuso. After a devastating earthquake in Los Angeles, survivors experience physical mutations, including fusions with other bodies or gross-out puss-filled sores. The world has been thrown into a catastrophic wasteland, and Ellison creates such a vision that's not too far removed from our own, at least in terms of the digital effects on human psychology and our understanding of relationships. Fears are heightened when four attackers — their tethers — appear with the intent of them fighting for survival. While this film strays away from the heavy themes of racism that Peele is known for, it does speak to a louder social context: that the evil we fear is inside of us . Peele directs Us with a masterful collection of horror-movie tricks — jump scares that actually pay off, a cat-and-mouse game in an isolated place filled with bright lights and deep pools of impenetrable shadow. But his greatest asset is the performances, which turn an already creepy premise into something endlessly inhuman and unnerving.

Sweetheart (2019)

Sweetheart is a 2019 American survival horror film directed by J. In 1966, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced Black Panther in an issue of Fantastic Four and DC soon followed with Jon Stewart. They went on to become iconic characters. Since 1966, the list of Black comic book icons only continued to grow. King of the technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda, T’Challa possesses enhanced senses, superhuman strength, agility, reflexes, and stamina as a result of eating a heart-shaped herb in service to the mysterious Wakandan Panther God. Black Panther made his feature film debut in Captain America: Civil War (2016), played by actor Chadwick Boseman, and later his first solo movie in 2018, which earned over $1.3 billion dollars at the box office worldwide and became the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. He hails from the fictional Suicide Slums, an allegory for modern inner cities and ghettos. With his ability to create electricity, he vows to better his neighborhood and fight for justice. He's also an Olympic gold medal winner. While some vigilantes just want to stop crime or punish criminals, Black Lightning tries to help communities become stronger. As a superhero, he wants to be an example that people can fight back against predators and opportunists. As an educator, he tells kids that who they are in life is their own choice, regardless of circumstances. More currently in comic book history, Storm married Black Panther and became Queen of the African nation of Wakanda。

Blade

This classic Marvel hero debuted in 1973 as a badass vampire hunter with a complicated origin story. The man turned out to be Afari, a feared vampire slayer, and in return Afari trained him to be a vampire slayer. His natural intelligence and the influence of several good people helped him leave the ghetto and attend California Technical Institute, but not before enlisting in the military. Upon graduation, he worked his way up the corporate ladder at Stark Industries Foster found himself working as a technician for the High Evolutionary at his Antarctic stronghold. Learning the High Evolutionary's plan to mutate everyone on earth, he managed to release a warning to the West Coast Avengers, who tracked him to the stronghold. But as the Avengers were being defeated, Foster swallowed a chemical that again transformed him into Giant-Man, and he learned that his cellular disintegration had been cured.

Cyborg

Part man, part machine, Vic Stone is a former member of the Teen Titans and a current member of the Justice League who wrestles to preserve his humanity with every new upgrade. While these treatments are ultimately successful and Victor's IQ subsequently grows to genius levels, he grows to resent his treatment. Vic dreamed of being a football player and devoted all of his time to becoming a star athlete while he was still in high school. But a tragic twist of fate that should have left him dead instead found him becoming part man and part machine—a Cyborg. Saved by his scientist father after an accident left very little of Victor’s body intact, Dr. Silas Stone used all of his advanced scientific knowledge to save his only child’s life, and to rebuild him into a superior being, one that was arguably now more machine than man.

Spawn

Albert "Al" Francis Simmons, also known as Spawn, was born in Detroit, Michigan. Therefore, the phrase “Black Lives Matter” came into play because to a certain subgroup of people, Black lives don’t in fact matter to them. The title of this article should be regarded in the same way. When you read the title of this article your first thought should not be, “well, anyone can suffer from mental health issues.” That statement is exceedingly obvious. Technically, anyone can suffer from mental health issues, yes. However, not only are mental health issues in the Black community severely overlooked but we also face the lack of cultural representation, socioeconomic disparities, and stigmas. Black people are struggling mentally, daily, and some are even opting for suicide because life has gotten that much more unbearable for them. The Black community has the system, society, and our personal issues stacked against us. Without the proper help or care, mental health issues almost seem inevitable for us.

Acknowledgement

The weight of correcting the issues regarding Black mental health is not solely on the system and society… It’s on us as well. There are those in the Black community, me included, that will, at times, opt to overlook their mental health issues which are not only unhealthy but destructive. Not only do we have to acknowledge our issues, but we also have to acknowledge when we need help. Most importantly we have to acknowledge that needing help is not a bad thing. Unfortunately, society has deemed seeking help to be considered weak, but I assure you it is the complete opposite.

Why Black people do not seek help

As I have mentioned above, Black people do not seek help due to the lack of cultural representation, socioeconomic disparities, and stigmas.. You will hear words like “I can understand how…,” “I empathize with you,” or “I’m sorry to hear that.” I cannot speak for every Black person in the world but as a Black person I would feel more comfortable opening up to another Black person. Not only will they understand where I am coming from, but they can give advice that is realistic and relates to me and my situation. For example, a middle-aged upper class White woman cannot tell a Black man how to combat his struggles with being a Black man in America… It just doesn’t work that way. This may sway Black people to not seek professional help because to spend money on help from someone who may not understand or relate to us can be a waste.

Read '5 Black Celebrities Who Have Opened Up About Mental Health':

Socioeconomic Disparities

Black people do not have the same access to resources as other races. One of the main reasons for that is money and reach. According to NAMI.org, “In 2018, 11.5% of Black adults in the U.S. had no form of health insurance.” Lack of resources can contribute to Black people not knowing where to look to even get the help they need. The few Black people that can get access to these resources are the Black people that are more well off or that 1%. For example, Earvin “Magic” Johnson was diagnosed with HIV after a preseason physical for the 1991-92 NBA basketball season. He was told he was going to die. Fortunately, Johnson is still alive and is now told he will live for years… but how? Due to his wealth and connections, he was able to have access to new drugs that has now made Johnson HIV- undetectable. This was not an example of a mental health issue, but it still proves my point. Resources need to be available and more affordable for all people because there shouldn’t be a price on mental health.

Stigmas

Stigmas regarding mental health issues are huge in the Black community. It’s almost taboo to admit that you need help due to the negative attitudes about mental health issues. For example, if you admit you may need help you may be told to “man up” or “don’t be weak.” It’s almost as if saying you need help is a cop out to quit or give up. Due to these stigmas many Black people especially, the youth may not feel comfortable speaking up, out of fear that they will get ridiculed.

Read '5 Organizations That Support Black Women's Mental Health':

Love yourself enough to take care of and fight for yourself! Don’t let these obstacles stop you from finding ways to take care of you. Millions of people throughout the globe celebrate it. Every year, a new nation hosts World Environment Day with formal activities. Sweden will host World Environment Day in 2022. To commemorate the 1972 United Nations Conference on Human Environment, Sweden and Kenya are convening a high-level international summit titled "Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all - our duty, our chance" in Stockholm on June 2 and 3, 2022. Five decades after the 1972 Stockholm Conference, the Government of Sweden will organize Stockholm+50 on June 2 and 3, 2022, with cooperation from the Government of Kenya. This international gathering marked the 50th anniversary of the leading conference and its final papers, most notably the Stockholm Declaration. Stockholm+50 will help expedite efforts toward a more sustainable society, including a long-term recovery from the COVID-19 epidemic. The meeting reflected on the urgent need for actions toward a healthy planet and the prosperity of all, achieving a sustainable and inclusive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and accelerating the implementation of the environmental dimension of Sustainable Development in the context of the Decade of Action in three leadership dialogues. The summit also emphasized the themes and results of the event commemorating UNEP's 50th anniversary (UNEP@50), which will be held in Nairobi in March 2022.

Read more about World Environment Day:

The concept pushes for worldwide, dramatic environmental change. While our individual consumption decisions certainly have an impact, collective action will bring about the dramatic environmental change required to move us toward a more sustainable and fair Earth where everyone may thrive.

We often overlook how much natural systems contribute to our overall well-being. But we are part of nature and rely on it. So today is the ideal time to visit your country's national parks and commemorate this crucial link. More and more individuals realize the need to manage our planet's resources and ecosystems sustainably. That view, however, is far from universal. That is why World Environment Day is so important: it promotes awareness and educates friends and family about the importance of the physical environment. But, before fostering environmental awareness in your local community, ensure you understand environmental concerns well. There's always something new to learn! The environment has grown more contaminated with chemicals and poisons, which are detrimental to human health. They may cause respiratory disorders and cancer, to name a few. World Environment Day motivates us to take action and improve the environment we can't live without by increasing awareness of the problems with the air we breathe.

Read 'The Effect of Climate Change in South Africa':

In 1787, the nation began bringing in freed Blacks arriving from London, Jamaica, Nova Scotia, Canada and more. These repatriates included exiled maroons from Caribbean countries like Jamaica and Barbados, former American slaves who fought for the British in the American revolution, illegally trafficked Africans and communities from neighboring countries. Today, the descendants of these repatriates in Sierra Leone are known as the Krio tribe. Other descendants of dispersed Sierra Leonean repatriates are known as the Saro tribe in Nigeria, the Ferdinando tribe in Equatorial Guinea and the Aku tribe in the Gambia.

Similar to Liberia, Sierra Leone was a nexus for repatriated Black formerly enslaved communities. While Liberian rule was mostly repatriate-led for over a century, political rule in the Sierra Leone colony was overseen by the British Government, and led by traditional Sierra Leonean rulers. Although the American Colonization Society initially sent returnees to Sierra Leone, the organization found Liberia more suitable. Ambitious freed Blacks in America, however, chartered some freed Blacks to Sierra Leone.

( A Sierra Leone Company 20 cent coin from 1791. Notable Blacks that led these series of migrations include John Kizell and Paul Cuffe.

John Kizell was a Sierra Leone-born man who was captured and sold into slavery in South Carolina. After being emancipated through joining the British Army during the American Revolution, Kizell settled in Nova Scotia, Canada, where he and his family faced race-based repression. Kizell and his family subsequently resettled to Sierra Leone, where he helped settle a group of freed Blacks. Because he was indigenous to the area, and could speak the local language, he was able to calm tensions between the black migrants and indigenes.

Paul Cuffee, a free-born merchant born in Massachusetts, was the son of an enslaved man from Ghana and a native American woman. In the 1810s, as one of the wealthiest Blacks in the United States of his time, Cuffee began assembling and migrating freed Blacks to Sierra Leone. All the repatriates of Sierra Leone merged their customs and culture into a creole identity, based in what is now the capital of the country, Freetown.

US organizations like churches played roles in developing the infrastructure of Sierra Leone through infrastructure building initiatives like creating schools. Vine Memorial Baptist Church, for example, created the Vine Memorial Baptist Training School. This institution, located in Freetown, Sierra Leone, is still in operation today.

The Amistad Case

( A gratitude letter to John Quincy Adams for his assistance with the Amistad case. A mutiny on the ship that resulted in the Africans liberating themselves found the captives sailing in the United States, where a US sea patrol detected the ship. During the time, the TransAtlantic Slave Trade was abolished in countries like the US and Spain. Sengbe Pieh, who led the revolt, and the other Africans on the ship were imprisoned and put on trial in Connecticut. Abolitionists, including Lewis Tapan and others, organized a legal defense, and after finding someone who spoke Mende and could translate, the captives were empowered to tell their stories. The liberated captives won the case, and in 1841, Pieh and the 34 other survivors were sent back to Sierra Leone.

This case illustrated an evolving change of consciousness in the US political system, shaped by a complex international climate and the rise of the abolitionist movement, as people in positions of power like John Quincy Adams utilized their privilege to campaign against slavery.

The Gullah People

( A Gullah restaurant in South Carolina. Due to their isolated location, the Gullah Geechee were able to maintain their customs, and today, they speak a language similar to Sierra Leonean creole, and maintain art forms that reflect their countries of origin. Still, by 1862, the French had begun purchasing land to support its coaling station at Obock after reaching an agreement with Afar leaders. During the 'Scramble for Africa,' the French legally acquired the province in 1884 and dubbed it French Somaliland in 1896. After Italy temporarily occupied the region after WWII, Djibouti proclaimed it a French Overseas Territory. The French staged a referendum in 1958 to determine if its inhabitants wanted to stay with France or join the newly founded Republic of Somalia.

FIgure 1 - Djibouti location. With France publicly favoring the Afar minority, just 25% of the people opted for independence. Djibouti was essentially informed that it would lose its largely self-governing status and become a French province governed by the French Parliament. After new election rules were implemented in 1963, essentially scrapping direct representation in the French Parliament in favor of a straight plurality voting based on lists presented by political parties in seven designated districts within Djibouti, demands for independence rose. President de Gaulle visited the territory in 1966 and was left with little doubt about the rising sentiment for independence and cries for change with two days of protests and rioting against the background of many other African states becoming independent republics during the 1960s and early 1970s.

Figure 2 - Independence day celebration. Its colors symbolize Djibouti's beautiful landscapes, multicultural population, and the eternal principles of the country's national motto: Unité, Égalité, Paix (Unity, Equality, Peace). The Djibouti Independence Day festivities focus on presenting the finest of the African country's native customs. The parades and speeches by key persons, including the President, are at the heart of the festivities. People also make the day their own by singing, dancing, and having a good time. The military parade is a prominent feature of the celebrations. The national army displays the many forces and equipment at its disposal. Troops from the United States, France, and Germany also participate in the parade, headed by a marching band. On this day, Djibouti's national anthem is performed. The procession is followed by a celebration at the Presidential Palace when he gives a speech to the East African nation's ordinary people. Traditional Djiboutian dishes include Djibouti Fah-fah (Djibouti soup), a substantial stew made with meat and vegetables and eaten over Canjeero, a crepe-like fermented flatbread.

The country's expatriate groups also commemorate Djibouti's Independence Day. It was colonized by the Portuguese and gained independence on June 25, 1975. The country was gripped by civil war soon after becoming independent. Still, the country is underdeveloped, marred by acts of the ‘Sons of Mocimboa’ with abductions, the burning of homes and other gruesome acts of violence.

Additionally, a slowdown of economic growth has occurred following the hidden debt crisis in 2016. That crisis led to another crisis of economic governance and a protracted economic slowdown with growth falling to 3 percent between 2016 and 2019. The slowdown continues due to the natural disasters in 2019, the insurgency in Northern Mozambique since 2017 and COVID-19 since 2020. Despite the heaviness of negativity, hope stands tall with the discovery of some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world.

Read more about Mozambique:

In the midst of celebrating Mozambique’s independence, it is important that positive information about the country is highlighted. Despite the trauma of war, poverty and a generally negative public image, this south-eastern African country boasts positivity through a son of reggae music.

Ras Haitrm was born in 1980 in the midst of a civil war in Maputo, Mozambique’s capital. Born as Rui Paulo Matavele, the reggae artist grew up with music about war and the African struggle that surrounded him.

As a youngster, Rui acknowledged and accepted that music would play a primary role in his life. When he was seven years of age, he received his first hand-made guitar from an older friend. As fate would have it, the musician now plays bass, drums, percussion and many traditional African instruments.

He also grew up listening to musicians such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Burning Spear, who were heroes of Mozambique freedom fighters in the 1970s when they were battling Portuguese colonization. All three are among the stalwarts of Jamaican reggae music. It may have been this exposure that inspired his desire and dream to record music and collaborate with Jamaican musicians in the home of Reggae.

Read '5 Best African Music Artists':

This led to his album entitled, “Go and Tell the World”.

The Mozambican musician connected with the Firehouse Crew by way of a mutual friend. He met with the drummer of the Firehouse Crew, George “Dusty” Miller, who agreed to collaborate with him. The collaboration facilitated connections with other Jamaican musicians including, saxophonist, Dean Fraser, singjay Jahbar I, and guitarist, Winston “Bo-Pee” Bowen.

In a 2017 interview with the Jamaica Observer, Ras Haitrm said, “I didn’t expect to meet the Firehouse Crew as it was not planned from the beginning. So, it was a very big shock for me and still is until now, to realize I was accepted, in a way, into their circle”.

Ras Haitrm’s repertoire generally addresses social injustices that happen worldwide and to provide a sense of peace among his listeners to remind them crimes against humanity will not last forever.
