If left unchecked, chronic stress can lead to serious health problems. A serious illness, job loss, a death in the family, or a painful life event can cause high levels of stress. You may feel down or anxious for a while, and that's normal too. A doctor can help you if you feel down or anxious for more than several weeks or if it interferes with your home or work life. Therapy, medication, and other strategies can help, but you can learn to manage stress before it gets too much by following these tips:

Keeping a positive attitude is important.

You cannot control all events.

Rather than becoming angry, defensive, or passive, assert your feelings, opinions, or beliefs.

Improve your time management skills.

You should set limits appropriately and say no to requests that would cause excessive stress.

Invest time in hobbies and interests.

Alcohol, drugs, and compulsive behaviors can increase your stress levels.

Spend enough time with your loved ones.

To learn more healthy ways to deal with stress, seek help from a psychologist or other mental health professional trained in stress management or biofeedback. Consider these lifestyle changes to help manage stress:

Exercising

For one thing, physical activity can help you sleep better. Better sleep means better stress management. Scientists don't know exactly why, but people who exercise more tend to get deeper, slower-wave sleep that helps rejuvenate the brain and body. If you're planning to exercise too close to bedtime, you might disturb your sleep.

A number of hormones are released as a result of exercise, including endorphins and endocannabinoids, which help block pain, improve sleep, and help sedate you, which may explain why exercise helps your mood. Runner’s high, or euphoric feeling after long runs, is thought to be caused by endocannabinoids (endocannabinoids). When your body feels good, your mind often follows. Lose 10 Pounds in DIY One Day Juice Cleanse2023-01-25 15:00:00 -0500Nina Indigo
Stay slim the healthy way.

Start the new year right. Some of you are looking for a fresh clean start, a simple way to keep that growing waist small.

Well, good news is here because I have the quick fix you need to balance your weight and get rid of that unnecessary weight dragging your body. All those long grueling hours in the gym, it would be nice to monitor your weight in a way that’s time sufficient and does not make you sweat profusely. In addition, these day cleanses also work as immune booster like a 2 in 1. If you are interested, read on to learn how it is done.

How to do a one-day juice cleanse

First off, you must know, follow, and embrace the guidelines for the cleanse if you want the best result. Here is how this juice cleanse works:

Rule one, this cleanse does not require any food intake. You are not permitted to eat until the next day, meaning if you start at breakfast time, you end the juicing at breakfast time the next day. The same goes for lunch and dinner. You are dedicating your whole day to juicing. And you are not starving yourself; the juicing will sustain you, if you do this the right way. The proper amount of juicing you want to take in for the day is about 4 to 5 quartzes. This is plenty to suffice. Remember the most important part, do not binge.

If you are used to binge eating, don’t during this cleanse, Alleviate it with tea.

The best way to alleviate binge eating while juicing is to drink herbal tea, any kind; peppermint, mint, chamomile, peach, apple cinnamon, raspberry zinger, mixed berries, hibiscus, rooibos, jasmine, ginseng whatever herbal you would like to consume during your day cleanse is fine. To be specific what is best is to keep the herbal tea hot or iced and have like 4 to 5 cups of tea a day, no more than this, add no sugar. You may only drink the tea sugar free and no sweeteners. If you are not a tea person, try to drink 3 16oz. bottles of water, this will help you. In addition, there cannot be fruit infusions added to the water, just plain water or you may use mint herbs, cucumbers, or lemon only. Those are the rules. And one more, this cleanse is not for those who have eating disorders, pregnancies, or diabetes. If this applies to you do not try this cleanse. If it does not apply to you, try it out. If you are wondering how to do this the right way, do not worry I have it right here.

Related:

The wellness industry has a history of ignoring Black women when launching products. In the wellness space, in particular, we are seeing Black female entrepreneurs exploring creative business ventures, from creating healing spaces for Black women to products that help improve our health and quality of life. This is a lucrative industry considering it was valued at $4.4 trillion in 2020 and is forecasted to be worth $7.0 trillion in 2025. Fortunately, there’s a rise in Black women-founded wellness brands that are making self-care more accessible to people of color of all ages. Here are a few fast-growing and well-established Black woman-owned businesses you can support to keep our wealth-building efforts growing.

LaLa Milan of Fit Girl Bod

Lala Milan, made famous for her gut-busting comedy videos on social media, ventured into the world of health and wellness industry with her platform, Fit Girl Bod. Outstanding medical care is a hallmark of a developed nation and its people. The standards of healthcare systems throughout the globe have been displayed in recent years by regional or global pandemics like Avian Influenza, Ebola, and the current Novel Coronavirus. A successful healthcare system requires well-maintained facilities and sufficient medical specialists and support staff to deal with unexpected situations and minimize fatalities. But which hospitals in west Africa have the most advanced technology and amenities?

Let's look at the most reputable healthcare facilities that have been there for quite some time and continue to serve their communities admirably.

St. Nicholas

The St. Nicholas Hospital is on Lagos Island in Lagos State, Nigeria. Menstrual care products make up a global multi-billion-dollar industry. Big corporations sell most products, but the brand often most favored are the ones owned by smaller woman-owned companies that understand first-hand what women want and need. At least six of those brands are owned by very motivated African American women entrepreneurs. Dixon started The Honey Pot Co because she was suffering from bacterial vaginosis for months and couldn't get relief. The design for each product was inviting and direct, and included a note that manages to speak almost exclusively to Black, Black queer, and Black trans women. She desired cleaner feminine care products, and some of the options she’d used in the past, she realized, were far from that. “There is definitely a need for Black women to be aware of the adverse effects of exposing our reproductive parts to these harmful chemicals,” Omezi said in an interview with Essence. The disproportionate amount of trauma and violence that Black and African American people in the United States face hurts their emotional and mental health. Black and African American people have been dehumanized, oppressed, and hurt throughout history. This has led to the structural, institutional, and personal forms of racism that still exist today. Even though there have been a lot of changes in society, the problem is still there and has taken on new shapes. These kinds of racism lead to a community where people don't trust each other and where people are poor and have trouble getting good health care.

The COVID – 19 brought uncertainty, loneliness, sadness from financial or personal losses, police violence and the way the news media treats it as a fetish, and controversial political language made it harder for people to process and deal with their trauma.

But there should be hope for recovery as more people learn about these problems and try to unlearn so-called "toxic" behaviors, like not going to get help for mental health problems. Let's take a moment to look at some statistics about mental health problems and find out how to deal with them in this article.

Read 'Mental Health Issues are a Symptom of Being Black':

Mental Health Issues are a Symptom of Being Black

When someone says, “Black Lives Matter!,” you always have that one white person that rebuttals with “well, all lives matter!” Read More »

According to data, suicide was the second most significant cause of death for Black Americans aged 15 to 24 in 2019.

Black females in grades 9-12 were 60% more likely to attempt suicide.

According to the Office of Minority Health at the Department of Health and Human Services, Black individuals in the United States are more likely than White adults to express chronic symptoms of emotional distress, such as sorrow and a sense that everything is a struggle.

Black individuals living in poverty are more than twice as likely as those with more financial stability to experience severe psychological anguish.

According to data, Like other groups of color, the Black community is more prone to face socioeconomic disadvantages such as exclusion from health, educational, social, and economic resources. Family ties, shared values, the ability to express oneself through art like music or spiritual practice, and the reliance on social and religious networks are all aspects of culture that can enrich and provide excellent support to one another. However, one aspect of this bond is the mental toll that racism, discrimination, and inequality take on those who experience them.

The Black community also faces systemic barriers to receiving the necessary medical attention. Because of the stigma associated with talking about mental health, many people of African descent find it challenging to bring up the subject. People in desperate need of mental health care may not get it because of this stigma. Belief in a higher power and other forms of spirituality can play a significant role in the healing process and should be incorporated into any effective treatment plan. To combat loneliness, religious leaders and congregations can be great resources. However, they shouldn't be the only choice for people whose mental health symptoms make it difficult for them to go about their daily lives.

We should not dismiss the creativity that has occurred on the ground. Churches, faith-based organizations, and barbershops have become unofficial mental health havens where Black people typically feel more comfortable speaking freely about their difficulties. To improve the experience, we should provide these organizations with resources, training, and access to mental health specialists, allowing us to offer help in places where individuals already feel secure. Many individuals need a shared sense of community, values and belonging in order to feel really at ease with their therapist. That frequently indicates a preference for a Black supplier for the Black community, but there isn't nearly enough to match the demand. Cultivating a secure and affirming place for Black people in mental health education programs is critical to improving Black representation in the mental health industry.

One possible way to encourage more people with mental health problems to get help is to lessen the stigma associated with doing so. They may be able to get treatment and then have better lives overall. The stigma surrounding mental illness needs to be dispelled in two ways: by increasing the availability of culturally competent providers and altering the dominant cultural narrative. Treatment for a mental health problem need not be any more stigmatizing than treatment for a physical health problem. Education about mental illness and normalizing mental health problems may help people realize this. Providers of mental health services should have the resources necessary to care for members of the Black community. Therapists and psychiatrists who are culturally competent may be able to reduce suspicion and improve treatment.

Podcasts and social media influencers also play a role in combating the negative connotations associated with this topic. Many rappers, such as G Herbo, Polo G, and Quando Rondo, have released songs addressing mental health. Other public figures have also spoken about these problems and tried to get people to pay attention to them using their platforms. People can get help, information, and even online therapy from culturally relevant apps and websites. This is helping to break down barriers to acceptance for African Americans.

Read 'The Realities of A Black Man...An overdue need for Self Care':

The Realities of A Black Man...An overdue need for Self Care

According to the American Psychiatric Association, only 1 in 3 Black adults who need mental health care actually receive it. Health experts suspect that insufficient sleep prompts or exacerbates many serious health issues, which is why getting optimal sleep should be a top priority. If you have sleep issues, you might have already tried natural sleep aids, including herbal supplements. You can read here on eight ways to get a good night sleep or perhaps you may be suffering from one of these sleeping disorders. While melatonin seems to be the reigning champ of sleep supplements, it might not be the best choice if you wake up in the middle of the night, are breastfeeding, or are on the pill. These are just a few of the reasons that some people reach for valerian root instead. We explore valerian root, covering its effects on the body, potential side effects, and recommended dosage.

Valerian root, often referred to as valerian, is the root of the valerian plant, officially called the Valeriana Officinali. Valerian root is also called all-heal, Amantilla, Baldrian, Garden Heliotrope, Tagar in Ayurvedic medicine, and Xie Cao in traditional Chinese medicine. This herb is native to Asia and Europe but can also be found in North America. Valerian root is an herbal remedy for insomnia, anxiety, and other health concerns. It contains a substance known as Valerenic Acid, which is believed to affect gamma-aminobutyric acid.

Valerian root contains multiple chemical compounds that may impact the human brain and body, but researchers haven’t completely pinpointed which compounds affect us. Most likely, multiple components act together to provide effects. Researchers have identified the following active compounds in valerian root:

Iridoids7, also called valepotriates

Essential oils, including valerenic acid and valeric acid

Lignans

Flavonoids

GABA (at low levels)

GABA is a chemical messenger that helps regulate nerve impulses in your nervous system. It’s one of the main neurotransmitters responsible for sleep regulation, and increasing the amount of GABA available in your body has sedative effects. Valerian root is probably best known as a remedy for insomnia.

Like other supplements, valerian root is sold over the counter and not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It's important to be cautious and read the label when selecting a supplement and this includes checking the dosage. 300 to 600mg capsules once per day, on a regular basis. have safely been used to treat insomnia in clinical studies, it's best to discuss the dosage with your doctor and start with the lowest dose possible.

Read about other supplements:

Depending on the dose, valerian root can be helpful for insomnia, anxiety, ADHD, muscle spasms such as menstrual and gastrointestinal cramping, pain usually associated with tension like migraines, and certain cardiovascular conditions.

Unlike the plant’s delicately scented flowers, valerian roots have a very strong odor that many people find unpleasant. When used as a dietary supplement, valerian root is generally dried, then made into a tea, tincture, capsule, or tablet. These forms of valerian root are available without a prescription in pharmacies, grocery stores, and online.

In comparison to melatonin, Dr. Aarti Grover, the medical director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at Tufts Medical Center, melatonin and valerian root both work in different parts of the central nervous system, and both can potentially help improve sleep. The hormone melatonin is produced by the pineal gland in the brain every night, typically peaking several hours before bedtime and working in tandem with the body's circadian rhythm.

Most studies of valerian root for sleep found that participants experienced no adverse effects, or mild side effects at comparable rates to groups taking a placebo. According to the National Institutes of Health, the side effects most commonly reported by people involved in valerian clinical trials are:

Headache

Upset stomach

Feelings of uneasiness

Heart rate changes

Insomnia

Drowsiness

Dry mouth

Vivid dreams

Studies of the longer-term safety of valerian root supplementation haven’t been conducted. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine also recommends against using valerian root for chronic insomnia because they’ve determined there isn’t enough research demonstrating its safety or efficacy. People taking sedatives or other anti-anxiety or sleep medications should avoid valerian root as there’s a chance these drugs could interact or become too sedating when combined. Even if one is not taking any other medications, it is always a good idea to talk to a doctor before taking any supplements, including valerian.

Source

Healthline

Sleep Foundation

Very well health

Pop Sugar

Medical News Today

Boitumelo Masihleho is a South African digital content creator. High-profile deaths like that of the late Kira Johnson and the delayed response medical professionals gave superstar athlete Serena Williams have pushed the injustices to the forefront. More women are turning to doulas for their experience and knowledge to give suggestions for positions that are more comfortable and give hands-on comfort during labor, providing continuous physical and emotional support before, during, and after birth.

In 2017 stars of the reality TV show Love & Hip Hop-New York, rappers Remy Ma and Papoose, shared their excitement that they were having a baby. Sadly, they soon realized Remy’s pregnancy was ectopic and she had to terminate her pregnancy with an emergency surgery. In addition, her doctor told her that she will probably never be able to give birth again but thankfully that wasn’t the case and the following year they were blessed with a baby girl, Reminisce Mackenzie Mackie.

Ectopic pregnancies have also become a point of discussion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, since there's confusion around whether the treatment of ectopic pregnancies could be considered an abortion, and thus may be restricted, depending on a state's particular abortion laws. Here's everything you need to know about ectopic pregnancies and how common they are in Black women.

Ectopic pregnancy is when a pregnancy grows outside of your uterus, usually in your fallopian tube. This can lead to life-threatening complications. An ectopic pregnancy can be fatal for the pregnant person without prompt intervention. The fallopian tube, for example, may burst, leading to shock and serious blood loss. Swift treatment is crucial. It cannot, however, preserve the embryo.

Ectopic pregnancy is a potentially life-threatening condition occurring in 1-2 % of all pregnancies. The most common ectopic implantation site is the fallopian tube, though 10 % of ectopic pregnancies implant in the cervix, ovary, myometrium, interstitial portion of the fallopian tube, abdominal cavity or within a cesarean section scar.

What causes an ectopic pregnancy?

The cause of an ectopic pregnancy isn’t always clear. Most people who have an ectopic pregnancy can have healthy pregnancies in the future, depending on the treatment they had and the condition of their fallopian tubes. But sadly, Black women are more likely to have ‘pen’ surgery than minimal invasive approach to treat an ectopic pregnancy compared to White women. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) reported that Black and Hispanic patients were more likely to have their ectopic pregnancies treated with salpingectomy, which is surgical removal of one or both fallopian tubes rather than salpingostomy, a surgical unblocking of the tube, and their study offers no reasons for the disparities.

Study author Alexandra G. Huttler, a third-year OB/GYN resident at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia said in a presentation that his previous analyses have identified that Black women are not only more likely to experience an ectopic pregnancy, but are up to 6.8 times as likely to experience ectopic pregnancy-related mortality compared to their White peers. This would mean that Black and Hispanic women are less likely to be able to fall pregnant or have a healthy pregnancy if they do. Prediction and prevention aren’t possible in every case. Maintain regular visits with your doctor, including regular gynecological exams and regular STD screenings.

Read ' 5 Types of Nonhormonal Birth Control You Should Have on Your Radar':

If they say “dance monkey dance” we are expected to dance… right? WRONG. We are kings and queens and we, of course, need crowns fit for kings and queens. However, people outside our race may not understand that our hair is not just hair but a statement, a movement, and a symbol of strength. Our hair cannot be contained or confined but that does not mean our oppressors will not try… and they have. In this article I will not only give you a quick history lesson about how our hair is a political issue, but I will also show you the versatility in our crowns. This goes for women AND men!

We often hear about the struggle with natural hair in the workforce. According to eeoc.com,

“after completing an online job application, Chastity Jones was among a group of applicants who were selected for a group interview on May 12, 2010. At the time of the interview, Jones, who is black, had blond hair that was dreaded in neat curls, or "curllocks." Catastrophe's human resources staff conducted the group interview and offered Jones a position as a customer service representative. Later that day, the human resources staff met with Jones to discuss her training schedule. During that meeting, they realized that Jones's curled hair was in dreadlocks. The manager in charge told Jones that the company did not allow dreadlocks and that she would have to cut them off in order to obtain employment. Jones declined to cut her hair, and the manager immediately rescinded the job offer.”

You have men and women with locs or with huge kinky/curly hair that battle discrimination and are in situations like this. You then have two choices… either tame it or you do not get the job. If you have locs you either cut them or you do not get the job. These are not fair options. Some people decide they just will not take the job, but others may not be able to afford walking away from the opportunity. So, they resort to wigs, relaxers, or just straightening their hair. It is bad enough that we are Black but then we have the audacity to have hair like ours… how dare us!! So how exactly did we get to this point?

A quick history lesson

The anti-Black hair sentiment has been around for centuries. In the 1700s, enslaved women and men wore head scarves to protect their hair from the sun during the long hours in the field. However, those that worked in the “big house” had to look and act a certain way and that included how they wore their hair. They either wore the wigs of that time or tried to tame it enough to mimic their white counterparts.

Then came the idea that if your hair were “tamed” or “straighter” you could pass for a middle-class status. With that, the invention of the hair straightening comb, also known as the “hot comb,” was made by Madam C.J. Walker. Walker became a millionaire and there were many that praised her for giving Black women an opportunity to “get ahead” for lack of better words. However, there were those that criticized her for insinuating that straighter hair was not only better but needed for social and economic advancement. This led to many women deciding it was best to tame their hair so decades later you began to see more hair straightening products such as, relaxers, flat irons, and modern-day wigs. It has gotten to a point that even on the big screen Black men have short, cropped hair and women are being shown in straight wigs. The only time you would see an actors/actress’s natural hair would be if the actor/actress is having a breakdown, sick, in prison or they are considered crazy. You rarely saw Black men and women in power positions sporting their natural hair in its raw form. This kind of representation along with societies defining standards of beauty made many men and especially women uncomfortable or ashamed of their natural hair. You also began to see labels put on Black people due to how they wore their hair. For example, if a man dared to grow out his hair or get locs they were seen as thugs and dangerous. Apparently, the way you style your hair determines if you're qualified to do your job or if you're an upstanding, non-threatening Black person.

It was activist Marcus Garvey that stated, “Don’t remove the kinks from your hair! Remove them from your brain!.” The “Black Is Beautiful” movement was introduced in the 1960s. The sole purpose of this movement was to encourage Black men and women to embrace their natural hair, skin, and features. This movement argued that you do not need to conform to white Eurocentric forms of beauty standards for it takes away from the true beauty of Black people. This movement started the domino effect, sparking other movements and many forms of support to the “Black Is Beautiful” narrative. You began to see films like, My Nappy Roots: A Journey Through Black Hair-itage (2010) by director Regina Kimbell, Good Hair by Chris Rock (2009), or Spike Lee’s film School Daze (1988). These films, along with many others, discussed how hair has become a political issue and the history of how hair has changed throughout the years. Movies like these pushed Back people to embrace their natural hair and to dump relaxers and straightening aids. Black representation was and is everything so seeing Black people on the big screen sporting their kinky/ curly hair ignited the nation. You saw political figures breaking barriers with their hair like Angela Davis, who wore her hair in a large afro. Increasingly every decade, year, and day we see men and women in the public eye pushing the “Black Is Beautiful” narrative as well as the people in the Black community.

We are even starting to see legal action behind this movement. According to thecrownact.com, “The CROWN Act was created in 2019 by Dove and the CROWN Coalition, in partnership with then State Senator Holly J. Mitchell of California, to ensure protection against discrimination based on race-based hairstyles by extending statutory protection to hair texture and protective styles such as braids, locs, twists, and knots in the workplace and public schools.” The recent efforts of The Crown Act are to push for action on legislation that would end hair discrimination in PA, according to wgal.com. Black women like Joanna McClinton are advocating in spaces that matter and in spaces we cannot reach to really resolve this issue. McClinton serves in the PA House of Representatives for the Democratic Party. She decided to take this issue personal and address this issue for all the women who struggle with hair discrimination in their daily lives!

(Joanna McClinton- PA House Democratic Leader)

I am a huge advocate for natural hair, and I will always encourage Black people to embrace themselves as they are because we are RAW. There are still those out there being denied jobs because of their hair. There are still directors that feel the need to put Black women in straight wigs. There are still those that will discriminate and profile us just because they can. However, we must continue to let them know we define our own beauty in our own way. We will not conform to fit into their world because we were not meant to. With that being said, let me flex on how versatile our crowns are. It does not matter the type, texture, length, color, loc’d or not. Our hair is beautiful!

Sources

https://www.eeoc.gov/newsroom/mobile-catastrophic-insurance-claims-company-sued-eeoc-race-discrimination-over-hair

Kyrah Page is currently a student at Lincoln University.
