Bob Marley's Legacy Lives On: A Journey from Rebel to Retail Royalty Revealed

Bob Marley. Source: Wikimedia Commons

The long-awaited Bob Marley biopic “One Love” will highlight important moments in the musician’s life – his adolescence in Trench Town, his spiritual growth, and the attempt on his life. But as a music industry scholar, I wonder if the film is yet another extension of the Marley marketing machine. Marley died in 1981 at the age of 36. He’d achieved a level of mainstream success unrivaled by other reggae acts, and he did so while challenging global capitalism and speaking to the oppressed. This image, however, is fundamentally at odds with what has happened to Marley’s name and likeness since his death.

Now you can buy Bob Marley backpacks, Bob Marley jigsaw puzzles – even Bob Marley flip-flops. The accusation of “selling out” could once seriously threaten an artist’s credibility; the insult wields far less power in an era when an artist’s survival often depends on sponsorship and licensing deals. Meanwhile, a deceased artist’s ongoing earnings are left in the hands of others. Nonetheless, when a musician as revered as Marley – and whose songs were suffused with messages of liberation, anti-imperialism, and anti-capitalism – becomes so commercialized, it’s worth wondering how this happened and whether it threatens his artistic legacy.

In its 2023 list of highest-paid dead celebrities, Forbes placed Marley in the ninth slot, right behind former Beatles frontman John Lennon. According to the publication, Marley earned US$16 million – or rather, his estate did. Marley’s business affairs are now controlled by family members – the estate – who have made deals with various merchandising and marketing partners, with all parties sharing in the profits. The commercial power of Bob Marley’s name generates the royalties earned by the estate, though precise percentages are not publicly available.

One posthumous musical release, in particular, has been a gold mine: Marley’s “Legend” compilation album.

Released in 1984 and featuring mainstays like “Could You Be Loved” and “Three Little Birds,” it’s the most successful reggae album of all time. It has sold over 15 million copies in the U.S. and has spent more than 800 nonconsecutive weeks on the Billboard 200. Collectively, its tracks have accounted for well over 4 billion Spotify streams, and its phenomenal success is a key reason that the private music publishing company Primary Wave, which is backed by investors such as BlackRock, spent over $50 million to buy a share of Marley’s publishing catalog in 2018.

Cover of the "Legend" compilation album. Fair Use

Read also:

The pioneer’s contributions to reggae are being revisited by those who understand the full scope of his impact on reggae – and many more genres besides. Read More »

A series of other albums have been released after Marley’s death. These include “Natural Mystic” (1995); the pop and hip-hop crossover “Chant Down Babylon” (1999); “Africa Unite” (2005); “Uprising Live!” (2014), which features his final concert appearance; the polarizing electronic mashup “Legend Remixed” (2013); “Easy Skanking in Boston ’78” (2015); and the curious “Bob Marley & the Chineke! Orchestra” (2022).

The “Legend” album has earned more than these later releases combined. But the material absent from that record speaks volumes. In his 2022 autobiography, Chris Blackwell, the former head of Island Records, the label that brought Marley’s music to mainstream listeners, revealed that “Legend” had been carefully tailored for white mainstream audiences. It achieved this by prioritizing songs centered on themes of love and peace, rather than those about Marley’s revolutionary Afrocentric politics and Rastafarian worldview, which appear on records such as 1979’s “Survival.”

On that album’s second track, “Zimbabwe,” Marley commends the country’s freedom fighters in their battle against the oppressive Rhodesian regime, declaring, “Every man got a right to decide his destiny”; he rails against the forces of exploitation and division in “Top Rankin’” and “Babylon System”; in “Survival,” he hails the African world’s “hopes and dreams” and “ways and means”; and “Wake Up and Live” is a clarion call to spiritual and political awakening.

These tracks don’t appear on “Legend.” None of the tracks from “Survival” do. And so four decades after his death, Bob Marley remains the world’s top reggae artist. But it’s his lighter, less controversial fare that’s established him as a global superstar. In an era of minuscule music royalties, a large portion of that $16 million in earnings also comes from merchandising, which has further watered down Marley’s revolutionary politics and spiritualism.

Thanks to what two writers called “the Disneyfication of all matters Marley,” you can now buy Bob Marley-themed coffee, ice cream, and body wash. There’s sustainably sourced, Bob Marley-branded audio equipment, in addition to a line of Bob Marley skateboard decks. The cannabis brand Marley Natural shows how the Marley name has become commercially intertwined with corporate America.

It’s funded by the American private equity company Privateer Holdings, which the Marley family had approached to gauge their interest in collaboration for the product’s release. The creators of the Starbucks logo were hired to design the logo for Marley Natural, further underlining the venture’s commercial ties.

Aside from the obvious fact that these associations pay no heed to Bob Marley’s anti-capitalist messages, I find it bitterly ironic that the private equity firm calls itself “Privateer.” Privateers were commissioned ships involved in plundering and murder across the Caribbean. They are among the “old pirates” Marley sang about in his mournful “Redemption Song.”

While the Marley family claims that Bob would have approved of the cannabis enterprise, critics see indiscriminate mass-marketing. The artist’s popular songs and lyrics have also been adopted as marketing tools to sell products that bear little relation to Marley’s music and message.

In 2001, his daughter Cedella, who runs parts of the estate, released a fashion line called Catch a Fire. The name comes from the Wailers’ first international album, which the group released in 1973. On it, tracks like “Slave Driver,” “Concrete Jungle” and “400 Years” connect the poverty of the present to the injustices of the past. Can T-shirts and other apparel help spread these messages? Perhaps. But it’s hard to argue that Marley-themed hot sauce does. Critiquing any aspect of Bob Marley’s legacy can elicit defensive responses. The estate has long portrayed the rampant commercialization of the Marley name and image as an important way to sustain and spread the artist’s ideals.

However, I think it’s important to ensure that the artistic and cultural values embedded in his music do not become clouded in a haze of rampant commercialization. While many of the commercial enterprises tied to his name reportedly raise money for Jamaican youth, I’d hesitate to say that this serves as a complete counterbalance to the erosion of Marley’s messages.

Screencapture from the film trailer for "One Love".

The “One Love” movie backed by Paramount Pictures – with four Marleys listed as producers – will certainly extend the mythologies and harsh realities of Bob Marley’s all-too-brief life, which was cut short by melanoma. But it’s also a massive international marketing vehicle for the sale of even more officially branded merchandise.

On the one hand, the fact that people so eagerly buy products plastered with Marley’s face and words reflects the profound connection he continues to have with his listeners. But on the other hand, it’s difficult to square Marley – a symbol of post-colonialism and anti-capitalism – with branding collaborations and private equity firms. His music means so much more. And his anti-imperialist messages, as warmongers threaten basic human rights around the world, are perhaps needed now more than ever.

Read also:

Through its use of dialogue and images, narratives that would otherwise have remained hidden are brought to life.

In Africa, the significance of the movie industry is crucial in highlighting the rich history, culture, and traditions of the continent and the people living within it.

Filmmakers have become custodians of history and must work tirelessly to provide accurate descriptions of the African experience. One major reason for this is to address the misconceptions, and stereotypes of the continent and its people.

As a result of the impact of colonialism on Africa, information and stories about the continent were told through the eyes of the colonialists which often cast a representation of Africa as the “Dark Continent”. Oftentimes, conversations with non-Africans have always presented an incorrect idea of the rich history of Africa.

Still from Things Fall Apart, Credit: Stephen Goldblatt.

Films like Things Fall Apart (adapted from Chinua Achebe’s book), and Tsotsi presents a clear picture of the struggle of Africans during the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial periods.

Such films provide a clear representation of the lived experiences of the people during that period and create a better appreciation of the reasons behind the clash of culture between the colonialists and indigenous ethnic nations within the continent.

This not only nurtures a sense of pride and identity but also addresses historical inaccuracies that have been carried over generations.

Another significant way the African movie industry is influencing the discovery of our roots is in the preservation of culture.

Traditional wedding ceremonies like the Lobola (practiced by the Zulu), the Igba-Nkwu (practiced by the Igbo of South Eastern Nigeria), and the Eunoto (practiced by the Maasai in Kenya) have constantly been showcased in African movies thereby capturing the essence of these ceremonies as well as the traditional rituals.

Documenting and showcasing these cultural practices through the lens helps create a sense of pride and identity in the minds and hearts of generations of Africans as well as offering viewers a glimpse at the richness and diversity of the African cultural heritage.

One other way the African Movie industry is strengthening the reviving of our roots is in the promotion of indigenous African language.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) provides an Atlas of some of the World’s languages in danger of extinction. In Africa, 33 countries with thousands of languages are already on the list as vulnerable, definitely endangered, severely endangered, or critically endangered.

Through film, indigenous languages find a platform for promotion, expression, and celebration, ensuring their preservation and continuity.

Filmmakers in the African movie industry have continued to produce movies in indigenous languages with English subtitles. This has served as a strong tool to enable audiences both at home and abroad to engage in their mother tongue in relatable ways thereby fostering a sense of identity.

Also, the use of indigenous language in African movies provides contextual depth to the storyline that ordinarily would have been lost if transmitted in a second language generally understood by non-Africans.

Additionally, the use of indigenous languages in cinema contributes to an opportunity for language learning and proficiency among both indigenous speakers.

In essence, the African movie industry is not only a platform for entertainment but also an instrument that plays a significant role in rediscovering and showcasing the richness of the continent and its people.

Read also:

Nigerian Artist Victor Ekpuk Revives Ancient African Graphic Writing

Portrait of Victor Ekpuk, Source: victorekpuk.com

Victor Ekpuk is an internationally renowned Nigerian artist known for his artwork inspired by ancient African writing and graphic writing systems. INTERwoven TEXTures is his first solo exhibition at the important Efiɛ gallery in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. There he has also unveiled his public art installation commissioned as part of the inaugural Dubai Calligraphy Biennale. It makes him the first African artist to display a public sculpture in the country.

Ekpuk’s work challenges popular representations of Africa as a continent without writing. (And consequently lacking in history, civilization, innovation, and achievement.) As a critical heritage professor, I have studied and taught Ekpuk’s work to students for years. So I was delighted to view the exhibition and interview the artist in Dubai as part of my ongoing research into his work.

Exploring “traditional” graphic writing forms along with his style of abstraction, Ekpuk creates a new text. One that reflects both historical and contemporary Africa, yet also reaches beyond the continent. His latest exhibition represents a powerful intervention. In his own words:

I want my works to be starting points for dialogue and discoveries into the differences and commonalities among cultures.

African writing and graphic writing systems date back to antiquity. They existed in Egypt, Kush, Meroë, the Carthaginian Empire, and the former Greek and Roman colonies, as well as in the Islamic Sahara, Sahel, and the savanna. The famous libraries of Alexandria and Timbuktu underscore the centrality of writing and literacy. Operating at all levels of society, writing and graphic writing contain sacred powers, symbolic associations, and esoteric attributes offering healing and protection – as specialized knowledge, even if only understood by a learned few or initiated persons.

In Africa, writing and graphic writing systems transcribe, transmit, and archive knowledge into a visual representation. They include pictographs (non-abstract), ideograms (abstract), and alphabetic scripts (based on phonetic inscription). Nsibidi (pronounced nn-see-bee-dee) is an indigenous ideographic script that Ekpuk draws inspiration from. It comprises one thousand signs, including nouns, verbs, and complete thoughts. It originated in the 5th century among the Ejagham people in south-eastern Nigeria and south-western Cameroon. It spread to neighboring ethnic groups, including the Igbo, Efik, Ibibio, Efut, and Banyang, where it flourished from the 1600s to 1800s. In the 1700s, nsibidi spread to Cuba through the transatlantic slave trade, where it was maintained by enslaved Africans.

INTERwoven TEXTures exhibit at Efiɛ gallery.

Nsibidi is associated with the Ekpe society, a male ritual association in Nigeria. But it also plays a role in daily social life, philosophy, cosmologies, and communication. Today, nsibidi, and the designs inspired by (or that emulate) the script are inscribed into the ground. They are also applied to other “coded” objects (like cloth and carvings), scarifications, and tattoos.

Ekpuk remembers:

I could draw before I could write. I was always scratching outside in the soil.

His knowledge of nsibidi dates back to his childhood, through his grandfather. But it wasn’t until he was an art student at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ife that he became fascinated with nsibidi, though he is not a member of the association. This led to his adaptation, modification and (re)invention of nsibidi into his own signature “script”, which he humorously describes as his “scribblings”.

Ekpuk’s career began as a political cartoonist and illustrator in Nigeria in the 1980s. Over the past 40 years, he has created an extensive body of drawings, paintings, collages, digital prints, sculptures, large-scale murals, ephemeral performative art, and room-size installations. Globally inspired, his work deals with the histories and contemporary concerns of Africans and people of African descent in the diaspora. But it is also concerned with the broader human condition. It is both universal and specific and engages diverse audiences.

Ekpuk’s artwork is characterized by intricate, large-scale compositions that merge African writing, knowledge, and aesthetics with his artistic expression. His visual grammar consists of signs, symbols, and lines that initially appear simple but represent complex ideas. They are multidirectional scripts (right-to-left, left-to-right, top-to-bottom, center outwards) created in “no specific direction … no specific line of motion”. Only a few inscriptions are translatable according to nsibidi traditions. His strikingly bold and vibrantly colored scripts are minimal yet intricate, separate but connected, past and present.

Read also:

Ekpuk’s works are housed in major international art collections. He keeps some works, especially his early ones, because they document his personal history. His private collection is for his family, particularly his son, who he feels should inherit some of the work. He chuckles:

Sometimes I even buy them back – if the prices are affordable!

Ekpuk’s new solo, curated by Awam Amkpa, consists of paintings on canvas, paintings on wood, and free-standing metal sculptures. Coinciding with the exhibition, the artist unveiled Passage to Promise, a striking interactive architectural public sculpture that encourages viewers to walk through its human-shaped doorway. He also recently presented his work at the Dubai Museum of the Future where he discussed his embracing of writing traditions, ancestral knowledge, and aesthetics in the Manuscript Series.

In this artwork, Ekpuk’s brilliance fuses nsibidi, Arabic, hieroglyphics, and art onto Qur’anic boards (employed for teaching Arabic, copying, and memorizing the Qur'an). This imbues his artwork with extraordinary artistic and symbolic power. (He used newly purchased wooden boards out of respect for these objects’ sacred nature.) Ekpuk’s work inscribes multiple, complex layers of knowledge and meaning, challenging us to rethink not only how but also what we see. The work takes on a life of its own through viewers’ eyes, experiences, feelings, and imagination. It’s befitting that Ekpuk applies terms like “mining” and “excavation” to his work.

Ekpuk’s artistic innovation draws on his politics, philosophies, research, and imagination – alongside his knowledge of a vast visual and material repertoire of ancient writing and graphic writing systems as well as objects from throughout the African continent. Importantly, he appropriates and transforms nsibidi into new forms, demonstrating its dynamism and significance today. Ekpuk’s presence in the United Arab Emirates marks a transformative historical, cultural, and artistic moment. Well received by audiences, he firmly inserts African art into the region. He invites us to (re)examine simplistic definitions of calligraphy, the boundaries between architecture, sculpture, and script, the distinctions between writing, graphic writing, and art – and to eagerly await his next creations.

Read also:

Black Female Leaders Who Are Shaping History Today

As Michelle Obama memorably said at the Democratic Convention in 2008, "The only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them."

Throughout history, Black women in America have played a crucial role in advancing the different sectors, from politics to sports to medicine and entertainment, shaping it into what it is today. In honor of Black History Month, we’re taking a look at Black female leaders who are still breaking barriers, doing their bit, and changing society for the better. These women have accomplished great milestones, paving the way for future generations to come.

Though this focuses mostly on modern-day women, we cannot forget to acknowledge other trailblazers like Billie Holiday, Coretta Scott King, Sojourner Truth and so many more, who walked so these modern-day women could run.

From breaking barriers in the White House to helping to develop a COVID-19 vaccine and many more, below are Black female leaders who are proof that you can achieve anything.

Kamala Harris: First Black, First South Asian American, And First Woman Vice President

Vice President Kamala Harris. Public Domain

She is in a political position no Black woman, or any woman, has ever held. In 2021, Harris made history as not only the first woman, but the first Black and South Asian American to become Vice President of the United States.

Challenges Faced by Blacks in STEM and Solutions

While on the surface it may seem like people of color have enjoyed greater access to opportunities in STEM, they still face significant challenges. Some of the challenges include:

Underrepresentation: People of color, particularly Black women, have long been underrepresented in STEM fields. A Pew Research Center Report showed that Black workers make up only 9% of the STEM workforce across all fields.

“Black students earned 9% of the STEM degrees awarded in 2018 across bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, levels unchanged since 2010. Black students earned 5% of master’s and research doctoral degrees in engineering or physical science during the 2017-2018 school year. Black students comprise just 3% to 4% of degree recipients in mathematics at the master’s level and above,” the study showed.

Solution: Implement inclusive recruitment practices that actively seek out and hire Black professionals, ensuring diverse representation within STEM organizations.

Isolation and Imposter Syndrome: One may end up feeling isolated when he or she is one of the few or the only Black person in academic and professional settings. Consistent exposure to stereotyping, discrimination, and microaggressions may lead to Black individuals doubting their abilities and qualifications, and ultimately feeling like they do not belong in the programs in the first place.

Solution: Institutions and other organizations need to create a sense of belonging for Blacks in STEM programs. Other ways include forming support groups, mentorship programs, and networking opportunities where people of color can share their experiences and seek guidance. Also, inclusive workplaces that value diversity will go a long way in addressing issues such as microaggressions and discrimination.

Financial Barriers: Not everyone can afford to pursue a higher education in STEM fields. The financial burden can be challenging for many Black individuals, limiting access to advanced degrees.

Solution: Provide financial support through scholarships, grants, and financial aid programs to reduce barriers for Black students pursuing STEM education.

Lack of Mentors in the Field: The contributions of Black individuals are largely forgotten and unrecognized or credited to white scientists. This deprives aspiring professionals and young Black students of STEM role models.

Solution: Teaching young children about the groundbreaking work of Black scientists will arouse their curiosity to explore topics within STEM. Ensuring that STEM curricula across the country include diverse perspectives, histories, and contributions will provide Black students with role models to look up to; figures who look like them and have likely had similar life experiences.

Read also:

The Fascinating Traditional World of African Beadwork
2024-02-06 10:00:00 -0500

Beadwork is an ancient and fascinating craft African cultures have practiced for centuries. Beads are among the most intriguing and important symbols in African culture, past and present. It involves using beads to create intricate designs that are not only beautiful but also have cultural and symbolic significance. African beadwork is a labor-intensive craft that requires patience and skill.

The history of African beadwork is rich and multifaceted. Beads were used for personal adornment and played a significant role in trade, often referred to as "trade beads." These beads, originating from various parts of the world, hold a unique place in Africa's commerce and cultural exchange history. The techniques used in African beadwork include peyote stitch, brick stitch, and loom weaving. African beads for jewelry making are more than just decorative as they are imbued with rich cultural and historical significance.

For example, in some African communities, women adorned themselves with waist beads during their first menstruation as a rite of passage into womanhood. The beads symbolize a young lady's fertility, developing body, and sexuality. Other cultures adorned chiefs and their wives with beads to indicate their wealth and status. The colors and shapes of beads hold different meanings in each community and are like visual dialects.

In South Africa, beading is deeply intertwined with cultural and social practices. Different tribes, such as the Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele, and San, have utilized beadwork for communication, storytelling, and adornment. Beaded items carry symbolic meanings, serving as markers of status, marriage, initiation, or spiritual beliefs. They also represent a connection to ancestral heritage and provide a visual representation of one’s cultural identity. The geometric beaded designs of the Ndebele people, for example, are said to reflect their cultural identity, as well as play various social functions. Different types of beadwork have historically been worn by girls and women at different stages of their lives, communicating their status as children, unmarried adolescents, or married women.

Read also:

While the Maasai have been crafting jewelry for hundreds of years, they didn’t start using the tiny beads we’re now familiar with until the 19th century. Before, jewelry was made of local materials sourced from nature, including twigs, horn, and bone. To make beads, women used seeds or clay, dyed to achieve a specific color.

Each color has a specific meaning, usually associated with the cattle who sustain and nourish the Maasai. The color blue symbolizes sustenance, energy, and the bright blue sky which provides water for the people and their cattle. Red symbolizes bravery and strength, but also the blood of the cattle which are slaughtered for sustenance and during celebrations. For the Maasai, like other tribes around the continent, green symbolizes health as well as the earth’s land, which grows food for the cattle that sustain the Maasai.

Orange represents warmth, friendship, and hospitality. It’s tradition for guests to be welcomed to the home with an orange-colored gourd of milk. Yellow represents fertility, health, and growth. Also, the sun helps grow the grass that feeds the Maasai’s cows and nourishes life. Lastly, the color white represents purity and health, the latter being associated with cow’s milk, which provides nourishment.

The Maasai, Samburu, Turkana, and Rendille tribes are highly associated with beadwork in Kenya. They can be found in Kenya’s northern Great Rift Valley. Some of their notable characteristics are the elaborate African beaded jewelry encircling their necks, red-painted chins with ochre, beaded headdresses, stacked beaded bracelets jangling on their wrists, and to the married ones, heavy brass earrings. The beadwork embodies the Maasai culture, representing beauty, tradition, strength, and sometimes even social status.

For example, when a woman becomes engaged, she’s gifted a special engagement necklace consisting of two intertwined beaded strands. For her wedding day, she receives a wide collar necklace made by her mother to wear for the ceremony. Unmarried Maasai girls would wear the large flat disc around their necks, which shows their grace and flexibility when dancing. -Women who are getting married would wear a heavier disc, which often reaches their knees, making it difficult for them to walk pace around.

Read also:

Imposition of tax levies had become a normal occurrence with little or no pushback. While many grumbled under the weight of colonial oppression offering little physical resistance, a group of women from the South Eastern part of Nigeria decided to confront what they deemed an obnoxious tax levy imposed on women.

Their rallying cry was the spark needed to ignite a fire amongst other women from the various ethnic nationalities within the region leading to one of the major uprisings against colonial oppression in the country.

These remarkable women gave voice to not only the high-handedness of the British tax administrators but also shed light on the social inequality and economic burden imposed by the British colonial rule. To demonstrate such superiority, Nazi Germany was scheduled to hold the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Jesse Owens, a Black track and field athlete, though faced with racial segregation and discrimination back home in America became a symbol of truth on the equality of all men by going on to win four gold medals in the track and field event. His remarkable achievement put an idea to the Nazi propaganda, racial stereotypes, and the fallacy of racial superiority theories.

Beyond his athletic victories against the Nazi propaganda machine, Jesse Owens faced continued racial segregation back at home. Using his influence, Owens continued to speak up for racial equality, especially in sports.

Refusing to participate in segregated events, Owens continued to use the power to unite people across racial divides.
