Since there are no ways to prevent a hurricane or its impact on our infrastructure and lives, the best we can do is to prepare for its occurrence in an attempt to reduce the impact.

Before getting into the tips, learning a bit about the weather phenomena is important.

What Is a Hurricane?

A hurricane is a type of storm known as a tropical cyclone, that forms over tropical or subtropical waters.

Before tropical cyclones are identified as hurricanes, based on their sustained winds, they may be identified as tropical disturbances, tropical depressions, or tropical storms.

When tropical cyclones’ sustained winds get to 74mph, they are referred to as hurricanes. These storms are classified according to categories based on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The categories range between 1 and 5, with 5 being the strongest with a hurricane’s maximum sustained winds. So, the higher the category, the greater the chance of possible damage to property, infrastructure, and loss of life.

How Are Hurricanes Formed?

In basic terms, hurricanes are formed within the Atlantic basin (the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. Sometimes, they form within the North Pacific Ocean,, and less frequently,, in the central North Pacific Ocean.

Storms are generally named when they get to the point of being a tropical storm. The names come from a six-year rotating list of names that gets maintained and updated by the World Meteorological Organization (WTO).

(Source: pixabay.com)

Learn more about Hurricanes :

Hurricanes and the Atlantic Hurricane Season

"A hurricane is a violent, warm-core tropical storm with a minimum wind speed of 119 km or (74 mph), rotating in a counter-clockwise spiral around a region of low pressure called “the center of the eye”

The Season and Preparing for it

The Hurricane Season starts on June 1 every year and lasts until November 30. Though there is a specified period for the season, storms are known to occur outside of this time frame.

As shared by The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 123 hurricanes have directly impacted the continental United States. This ranges from Texas to Maine. It is important to note that the risks extend beyond wind damage.

In actuality, about 90% of deaths associated with the impact of hurricanes and tropical cyclones involve water. This includes storm surges, inland flooding, rip currents, and rough surfs. Director of the National Hurricane Center, Ken Graham, in an address he gave in a 2021 hurricane preparedness safety video states,

“The first 7 days of May saw NOAA providing general tips to help people plan and prepare before the hurricane season actually starts. NOAA encourages people to “be prepared for [the] hurricane season. Today, you can determine your personal risk, find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone, and review/update insurance policies [where possible].”

Additionally, NOAA shares that “you can also make a list of items to replenish hurricane emergency supplies and start thinking about how you will prepare your home for the coming hurricane season. If you live in hurricane-prone areas, you are encouraged to complete these simple preparations before [the] hurricane season begins on June 1.”

The tips they’ve shared are:

Determine your risk

o Determining risk applies to everyone. Those who live on or near the coast and those who don’t are equally at risk from experiencing hurricane-related hazards. Hurricanes move across the land as much as they do across the water, and the wrath of damage they can leave behind is tremendous. So, consider how possible storm surges, rainfall and flooding, or strong winds may impact you.

Develop an evacuation plan

o This is an important tip to follow. The National Hurricane Center says it best – find out if you live in an evacuation zone, plan several escape routes, and have a to-go bag ready with supplies, important documents, medication, clothing and other important items. If you have pets – plan for them, and follow whatever evacuation orders that may be given. It is also important to identify the evacuation shelters nearest to you.

Assemble disaster supplies

o Stock up on supplies for the season. So, ensure that you have enough food, water, and toiletries – (non-perishable food items are better to keep at this time), and ensure that you have cash on hand. Keep your gas tank full, and secure a working battery-operated radio, batteries, and phone chargers. Ensure as well that you have your medication ready. If you can, ensure that your prescriptions are filled in advance with contingencies in place.

Get an insurance checkup

o Become familiar with your policy and identify if it needs to be updated. In that same breath, consider getting flood insurance in the event of storm surges or inland flooding, and keep your documents with you at all times. Store them safely to prevent water damage or being lost. Keep in contact with your insurance agent to figure out the best approach to take.

Strengthen your home

o We see it every year. With the threat of a storm touching land and affecting particular communities or countries, hardware stores are inundated with folks rush-buying sheets of ply, or grocery stores are flooded with people rush-buying and clearing the shelves. Know what you need ahead of time. Some ways to strengthen your home include covering your windows, trimming overgrown trees, securing loose outdoor items, and moving your vehicle to a safe location among others.

Help your neighbor

o Be your neighbor’s keeper and help them with everything that you have planned to do for yourself. Help them to prepare, help them to evacuate if it comes to that, and when a storm passes, check on them, and help them to clean up.

Complete a written plan

o The National Hurricane Center encourages people to create a plan that will include an emergency contact list, ensuring that one of the contact persons is outside the impact area. The plan should essentially include aspects of the other tips – an evacuation plan, your escape routes, the evacuation centers in and around your community, etc. Importantly, share your plan with people.

All of these together can cause damage to homes, and infrastructure, and they can uproot lives and drain the pockets of the affected in terms of clean-up and preparation for future occurrences.

As reported in The Scientific American, in 2017, Hurricane Harvey hit Texas and the neighborhood that suffered the greatest loss in terms of flood damage was located in the South-West of Houston with a population that was 49% non-white. In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina devastated South-East Louisiana, the most extensive damage took place in African American neighborhoods. Further to that, 4 of the 7 zip codes that saw the most flood damage were at least 75% Black.

According to research published in January 2022 in the journal, Nature Climate Change, Black communities will be disproportionately saddled with billions of dollars of losses because of climate change – as flooding risks grow in the coming decades.

Oddly enough, The Scientific American expressed similar sentiments in a 2020 article entitled Flooding Disproportionately Harms Black Neighborhoods. They report that the concentration of flood damage in urban areas with large Black populations may contrast to images of hurricanes hitting affluent coastal areas and floods swamping rural, largely white communities.

As reported by NBC News, the 2022 published research reveals that the annual cost of flooding across the US will hit US$40 billion annually by 2050, compared to the current US$32 billion. The research put forward shows that while the statistics indicate that today, it is mostly white, poor constituencies who are on the fringe line, in the future predominantly Black communities will be the worst hit.

Environmental justice experts state that the research shows how climate risk is intimately linked to race within the US, and the trillion-dollar infrastructure bill contains little to address the underlying conditions that put poor people and people of color in harm’s way.

Coastal communities in the South where African Americans make up a large percentage of local populations are areas at the highest risk of sea-level rise. – Based on information from a 2017 paper in ScienceDirect.

As reported by EcoWURD about the media reporting of Hurricane Florence, though the storm hit “some of the highest concentrations of Black residents in the US”, media seemed to focus on non-Black communities that were affected, perhaps significantly less. This piece of work delves into the lack of reporting and under-reporting of the impact that hurricane devastation has on Black populations in the US. It also speaks to the lack of resources to help communities to prepare for and escape the harsh effects of a storm blowing through their communities.

At the end of it all, bear in mind that while people are made aware of what they should do to prepare for hurricanes, tropical storms, or any form of a tropical cyclone, there is a bigger picture. How are minority communities impacted by the after-effects of storms?

Sources:

What is a Hurricane?

Seven safety tips to prepare for the hurricane season

National Hurricane Preparedness

Flooding Disproportionately Harms Black Neighborhoods

Black Neighborhoods at risk as climate change accelerates flooding

Hurricanes Always Hurt Black Folks the Most

Candice Stewart is a Jamaican content writer specializing in human interest feature stories. In February 2022, 4 million Americans left their jobs for others with better benefits. A study by MIT reported that non-economic factors that attributed to workers joining the Great Resignation include job insecurity, toxicity in the workplace, regular burnout, and not feeling valued.

While the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are not to be underestimated, socio-economic changes are also gaining traction, with workers leading workforce innovation and pressuring organizations to evolve their relationships with workers. In 2020, the Kauffman Foundation reported that the creation of Black businesses skyrocketed higher than it had in the last 25 years. Malaria is a primary cause of sickness and death in many of the nations where it exists. Young children, who have not yet gained immunity to malaria, and pregnant women, whose immunity has been reduced by pregnancy, are the most susceptible populations in places with high transmission. Malaria has tremendous economic repercussions for people, families, communities, and countries. So, what exactly is malaria and how has it affected the African continent? Let us investigate.

Figure 1 - Malaria perpetrator. Source - Google

Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious illness that affects people and is caused by Plasmodium protozoan parasites. Almost all human infections are caused by four species, but P falciparum causes the bulk of infections in Africa and is responsible for the most severe forms of the illness, with the greatest fatality rate. When an infected mosquito bites a human, the parasite from its saliva enters the person's bloodstream. This is how many distinct mosquito species spread malaria. Each malaria-transmitting mosquito species has a unique life cycle, preferred water environment, and favored feeding habits. The African species that transmit malaria have a long lifetime and a strong human-biting behavior, which is one of the primary reasons for the high occurrence of malaria in Africa. Malaria continues to have a terrible effect on people's health and livelihoods all across the globe, despite the fact that it is readily preventable and curable.

According to the CDC, an estimated 627,000 individuals died from malaria in 2020, with the majority of them being young children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Over the recent decade, an increase in the number of partners and funding has accelerated malaria control efforts. This expansion of treatments has saved millions of lives worldwide and reduced malaria mortality by 36% from 2010 to 2020, giving rise to expectations and plans for elimination and, eventually, eradication. With its collaborative work in many malaria-endemic nations and areas, the CDC offers technical knowledge to these initiatives. Young children who have not yet gained partial immunity to malaria are the most susceptible populations. Pregnant women, whose immunity is reduced by pregnancy, particularly during the first and second pregnancies, and travelers or migrants from regions with low or no malaria prevalence, who lack immunity.

Figure 2 - Illustration of Malaria. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 95 percent of malaria cases and 96 percent of fatalities, with children under the age of five accounting for 80 percent of all malaria deaths in Africa. Malaria has far-reaching economic, social, and human effects on the African continent, and immediate action is required to accomplish the objectives set by the WHO's Global Technical Strategy for malaria for 2030. The pace of progress against the illness has halted in several high-burden nations since 2015, and the COVID-19 pandemic will exacerbate an already grave position in 2020. However, there are grounds to be optimistic. Over the past two decades, the malaria community has achieved remarkable advances in Africa and throughout the world, averting 1.7 billion cases and 10.6 million deaths between 2000 and 2020. Furthermore, throughout the pandemic, malaria-endemic nations, the majority of which are in Africa, avoided the WHO's worst-case scenario of malaria mortality.

Figure 3 - Vaccination for Malaria Illustration. Following experimental studies in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi that followed 800,000 children since 2019, the WHO approved expanded use of GSK's RTS,S malaria vaccine. Although the vaccine was the first to be approved, it is only 30% effective, needs four doses, and fades after a few months. Scientists, on the other hand, believe that its approval will be a watershed moment in attempts to reduce the malaria load in Sub-Saharan Africa. The area is responsible for the vast majority of the world's 400,000 malaria fatalities each year. RTS,S, when paired with seasonal antimalarial medicine, decreased clinical episodes, hospitalization, and mortality by around 70%, according to new research. Malaria vaccine success has resulted from a complex ecosystem of collaboration and novel financing channels combining academics, pharma, international charities, and significant amounts of direct government support.

Anand Subramanian is a freelance photographer and content writer based out of Tamil Nadu, India. Coping with climate change requires imaginative and inventive answers at all levels of society and administration. In South Africa, the effort is being done in a variety of national and municipal government ministries, as well as at the community and individual levels, to address the effects and causes of climate change. So, let's take a look at how South Africa has responded to climate change.

Figure 2 - Climate change effects in South Africa. Source - Google

Southern Africa's climate ranges from desert to humid subtropical. It is impacted by its terrain and large-scale seasonal atmospheric phenomena, such as sea surface temperatures in the Indian and South Atlantic oceans (due to the Benguela current). Rainfall is mostly caused by the ITCZ's motion. Except for South Africa, the majority of the region's rainfall falls during the summer months (November–March). Because of the effect of ocean currents and prevailing winds, rainfall varies greatly over southern Africa. The tropics near the equator get the most rainfall, as does eastern Madagascar, which may receive up to 3,100 mm per year. Temperatures vary greatly. Summer temperatures in the Kalahari Desert of Namibia and Botswana approach 40°C during the day, as do the coastal areas of Mozambique. Lesotho, South African, and Zimbabwe highlands have the coldest winters due to a latitudinal gradient that causes temperatures to fall southwards. Rainfall varies greatly over the area, with a marked east-to-west gradient ranging from relatively dry conditions around Namibia's western coast to significantly greater rainfall along Mozambique's coast. The majority of southern Africa has two different rain seasons: a rainy season in the summer half of the year, about November to March, and a dry season in the winter, around April to October. Rainfall occurs all year in areas near the equator and eastern Madagascar. Winter rainfall occurs in South Africa's Cape area owing to the effect of mid-latitude cyclones. Tropical cyclones make landfall on the Mozambican and South African coasts on occasion, bringing heavy rain and floods to Mozambique, the northern regions of South Africa, western Madagascar, and Zimbabwe.

Read 'The Effect of Climate Change in South Africa':

The Effect of Climate Change in South Africa

The cities and towns would be badly impacted if immediate adaptation measures are not implemented, leaving millions exposed and susceptible to climate change. Read More »

The South African national climate change response policy white paper (NCCRPWP) was approved in 2011, and it outlines the government's vision for establishing a responsive intervention system to effectively mitigate the underlying forces of climate change and moderate its negative impacts on citizens. Building capacity and resilience in the country's agriculture sector, as well as establishing disaster risk reduction and management mechanisms to combat susceptibility to severe climate change risks, are among its goals. Through effective communication, the NCCRPWP promotes climate change literacy among South Africans. It aims to influence farmers' behavior in response to climate change and to guarantee that climate change information informs their decision-making processes. It emphasizes the need for climate change knowledge and response methods for South Africa's most vulnerable farmers. It also offers a framework for managing climate change risks, advocates for resilience and adaptation, and establishes the groundwork for education and awareness via outreach programs and human capacity building.

Read 'Solar Energy in Africa and Its Importance':

These increased objectives will also result in South Africa's emissions declining in absolute terms beginning in 2025, a decade sooner than previously envisaged. Its climate commitment is much more ambitious than what it proposed five years ago when the Paris Agreement was signed. According to Climate Action Tracker's criteria, South Africa's plan and modified 2030 emissions reduction goal bring the country's pledges closer to what is required internationally to prevent warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The new target will see GHG emissions in the range of 350-420 MtCO2e by 2030, aligning with recommendations from the Presidential Climate Commission and confirming the value of the new independent statutory body's technical work and public engagement when considering the draught updated NDC earlier this year.

The strategies and procedures stress the necessity of increasing South Africa's resilience to climate effects. Such adaptation measures are critical to assisting individuals in better coping with the country's increasingly severe droughts and other extreme weather occurrences in recent years. The rhythm of every pitch, just like every note, has a story. Bee-bop and baseball. The Negro League players decades ago would hobnob in the historic jazz district on Vine Street in Kansas City, Missouri, where the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum was later founded. The late manager John “Buck” O’Neil, the museum’s founder, once said the players in the clubs and the players on the diamond were like “kissing cousins”. Jackie Robinson, who played for the Kansas City Monarchs, and his teammates would seek their therapy through the ache of the blues. Robinson adored jazz, so much so, that the museum will host a concert, “Jazz & Jackie,” in Kansas City on May 7, the anniversary of the trailblazer’s first game with the Monarchs (info@nlbm.com via e-mail, or website: https://nlbm.com).

April’s observation of Jazz Appreciation Month is the perfect opportunity to go and celebrate the fields of the blues and baseball’s Negro Leagues, where once upon a segregated time, up until the 1960s -- as one baseball book title suggests -- Only the Ball Was White. But before venturing out to any of the in-person free or low-cost activities, be sure to contact the organizers to confirm event hours and inquire about their updated pandemic safety policies.

Here’s the WURD on Jackie Robinson Day

Friday, April 15, 2022. Jackie Robinson did more than integrate major-league baseball; his trailblazing debut in 1947 sent a color-blind message to the entire nation. The term "slap" is commonly used to downplay the apparent severity of an act, even if the conduct was very harsh. One person may smack another across the face and seriously damage them, yet calling it a slap may make it seem less violent since slapping is commonly associated with small violence. However, in the aftermath of the Oscar catastrophe, “slap” has reverberated throughout the globe in an entirely new manner, sparking a slew of internet disputes. So, let's talk about the significance of the slap in various cultures.

Various cultures have different perspectives about slapping. Slapping a kid is considered a form of physical abuse in certain countries, such as Iceland, and is banned, although, in others, such as England, it is considered abusive by only a few parents, and even then only somewhat so. Slapping competitions are common in Russian bodybuilding championships, with competitors standing across from one other and exchanging blows until one submits or is knocked out. It was part of the Siberian Power Show, which also featured bodybuilding, powerlifting, dance-offs, and a dumpling eating contest. The face-slapping event seems to be a thing in Russia since a slapping contest was staged during last year's Sarychev Power Expo.

Players in Major League Baseball complement one other with a warm pat on the back, but such is life in baseball's great world. The technique is so ingrained in the sport (and in sports in general) that most players inadvertently engage in it. They give and receive butt pats with little regard for the underlying connotations. What's considerably more difficult to pinpoint is when and where the ass slap first appeared, and how it became a part of the sports lexicon. Baseball players, on the other hand, are credited with creating — or at the very least popularising — the high five. As a statement of sheer, uncontrolled excitement, the high five quickly became a craze. Butt slapping first appears in sports on October 19, 1973, in a Philadelphia Inquirer piece on Penn State football's stoic defensive posture. In recent years, probably one of India's most high-profile instances happened when an enraged Delhi businessman called Harvinder Singh hit Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar at a public literary event. Mrs. Ojukwu is the wife of the Biafran leader, late Odumegwu Ojukwu, who died in 2009. The incident happened soon after Mr. Soludo took his oath of office, according to the event.

Almost 48 hours after the Academy Awards ceremony last Sunday, one scene from the show has stayed in the forefront, prompting endless talk and heated debate: Will Smith hitting Chris Rock. Some Hollywood leaders, commentators, and fans have defended Smith, claiming that he was only protecting his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, after Rock made a crude remark about her shaved head. Others have harshly condemned the outburst, asking worries about its impact on domestic abuse survivors, the message it may convey about violence, and if the whole incident was a display of toxic masculinity. And these are just a few of the passionate emotions and complex problems that have been highlighted.

Figure 3 - Will Smith and Chris Rock Slap. But, somehow she didn’t get weary, and instead persevered with received encouragement from colleagues.

As Judge Jackson, and all of us, attempt to overcome challenges and roadblocks to professional goals, it’s important to remember that we are often leaning or standing on the shoulders of those who came before us. For example, Judge Jane Matilda Bolin was the first African American woman judge in America. However, her firsts don’t stop there. Bolin was also the first Black woman to graduate from Yale Law School and the first to join the New York City Bar. On July 22, 1939, New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia appointed Bolin as a judge of the Domestic Relations Court and, unbelievably, for 20 years she remained the only Black woman judge in the nation.

Being the first isn’t easy but somehow these women found the strength and the drive to pursue and achieve their goals despite the obstacles thrown at them.

Poet Langston Hughes best captures this will to keep going in the poem, “Mother to Son”. Names will be called, lives will be changed, and franchisees will have another opportunity to reshape their future. As for the Philadelphia Eagles, most fans wouldn’t call last year’s playoff birth coupled with an early exit a success. However, with 3 first-round picks (15, 16, and 19), and a few young players finally coming into their own, the future looks bright for the Birds. But there are some areas that need to be addressed if the team wants to continue building off of last season’s positives. Here are the three biggest position groups the Eagles should target early in the draft.

INTERIOR OL

The Philadelphia Eagles had the number one rushing offense in the regular season last year. The rushing attack was probably the only intimidating part of the Eagles’ offense. That’s not all on Jalen Hurts. He also had an inexperienced wide receiving core that lacked overall playmaking ability, but I digress. The success on the ground was built from the ground up. At full strength, last year’s offensive line had 3 pro bowlers in Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, and Brandon Brooks. We’re going into this season with just two of them and Jason Kelce is in the twilight of his career. It’s time to reinforce one of the most formidable position groups on the team and in the NFC. Jack Driscoll can be an asset but has ended the last two seasons on IR. The same can be said for Landon Dickerson and Isaac Seumalo who have both dealt with availability issues. Drafting the best available OL as a plug-and-play starter is the type of move that pays off come playoff time.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE

Just take a look at the current Eagles roster. There are only three DTs on the team who are true NFL-caliber players, and one of them (Fletcher Cox) appears to be on the decline of his Pro Bowl career. Targeting an interior defensive lineman early in the draft is within the realm of possibility for the Birds. Howie Roseman has a history of drafting DTs early and often. Milton Williams flashed his potential over the course of the season, but the team ultimately needs someone to step in and keep Fletcher Cox’s snap count low. He would also serve as a security blanket just in case the injury bug hits Javon Hargrave again. There are more than enough prospects in the trenches worthy of a 1st round pick.

CB

This problem has plagued the Eagles for years now. Who starts opposite Darius Slay? Is it Avonte Maddox, second-year player Zech McPhearson or someone totally different? If the eagles aren’t going to spend money on a high-profile veteran like Stephon Gilmore, and I don’t think they should, then the team should focus on selecting a top-tier prospect in the first round. Draft a prospect with prototypical size, great recovery speed, elite ball skills, and someone that will be a sure tackler. Draft someone that tickles Mel Kiper’s fancy and will finally give Eagles fans a set of cornerbacks that won’t give them a heart attack every time the ball is in the air. An upgrade at cornerback will work wonders for the pass rush and the entire defense as a whole.

Mac Johnson is a Emmy nominated documentarian, award winning television producer and writer whose sole purpose is to provide a platform for underserved communities.
