Food was scarce. But, today China is a manufacturing and technological powerhouse and hunger is not paramount.

The official said when China was mostly a farming society the morning greeting or salutation among rural neighbors was, “Have you eaten?” This greeting represented the major concern regarding hunger in a rural community rather than being a mindless way of acknowledging the start of a new day. Now because of the country’s rapid growth, that greeting is no longer necessary.

Here on American turf, and in the midst of our continuing pandemic, while everyday greetings may not have changed, they have much more gravity. I now call and check on my friends on a more regular basis and I have become aware of how greetings and salutations have much more gravity. “Hi, how are you?” and the spontaneous, “Fine!” are both spoken with greater emphasis and listened to more intently. I am no longer mindlessly mouthing empty words. I am being more intentional.

When the pandemic ends or wanes hopefully there will be lessons learned. Maybe the pandemic terror has helped us to better understand how interdependent and other-concerned we are or can be.

At the start of the pandemic, many set up their sewing machines, made their own patterns, and designed colorful masks, not just for themselves, but for extended family and community members. When the government and media failed miserably in providing information regarding vaccine availability, many became information central bureaus in their living rooms, not only for their immediate family circle but the extended community circle. And, rather than having in-depth conversations about neighborhood or celebrity gossip, we painstakingly gathered and sought out critical medical information to help us better understand the mosh pit of misinformation we found ourselves in.

Boosters, N95 masks, omicron, and other variants are now part of our everyday lexicon. Language, salutations, and social interaction have been possibly forever altered. And, just as the morning salutation on a farm in the mountains in China reflected a harsh reality, our new inflections represent where we now find ourselves. And, possibly buried somewhere in this new reality, I believe there are many demonstrated positives of caring and concern to continue to practice.

How are you?

Karen Warrington has had a decades long career as a broadcast journalist, communications professional, performing artist, and documentary filmmaker. Some of the males in India’s governing institutions have been convicted of rape themselves. The issue of gender-based violence has been a continuous plague on women around the world. More women of the diaspora, in their respective countries, must catalyze change through becoming lawmakers, judges, and other governing officials to play pivotal roles in policy reform. It may save lives.

Works Cited

https://www.unwomen.org/en/what-we-do/ending-violence-against-women/facts-and-figures

https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20160801-indias-forgotten-jungle-dwellers

https://edition.cnn.com/2012/12/19/opinion/india-rape-anger-menon/index.html

https://thelogicalindian.com/news/jyoti-singh-rape-case/

https://edition.cnn.com/2012/10/12/world/asia/india-girl-gang-rape/index.html

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/dec/06/i-dont-see-anything-changing-despair-india-rape-crisis-grows

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/jun/28/poll-ranks-india-most-dangerous-country-for-women

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/dec/03/five-years-after-gang-murder-jyoti-singh-how-has-delhi-changed

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/1/10/one-woman-reports-a-rape-every-15-minutes-in-india

https://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/rajpur-khurd-african-nationals-attack-chatarpur-2823948/

https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2016/6/26/being-african-in-india-we-are-seen-as-demons

https://edition.cnn.com/2012/12/19/opinion/india-rape-anger-menon/index.html

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-south-asia-13264301

Nana Ama Addo is a writer, multimedia strategist, film director, and storytelling artist. On January 9th, 2022, a Bronx apartment caught fire and claimed the lives of 18, including 9 children, and injured over 60 people due to a faulty space heater and a lack of apartment maintenance. Many of the victims of the Bronx fire were of Gambian descent. In commemoration of the lives lost, and to prevent future tragedies, FunTimes Magazine offers these fire safety tips.

The National Fire Data Center reported that the lower the socioeconomic status of a community, the higher the occurrence of fires, which may be related to overcrowdedness, maintenance capacities, family structures, housing quality, smoke detector access, and more. While addressing poverty-related factors to solve this issue is worthwhile, it is important to be aware of fire safety strategies that individuals may utilize, especially during the winter months.

During the winter, more families use appliances that can potentially cause fire hazards, like space heaters. In a ‘Holiday/Winter Fire Safety’ podcast episode by the Forty Acres F.R.E.E. Tour, Lieutenant Lisa DeSamour of the Philadelphia Fire Department advises communities to keep heaters at least three feet away from combustible or flammable items. Lieutenant DeSamour also says to keep eyes on young children who may bump into the space heaters and to always turn off space heaters whenever one leaves the room. Lieutenant DeSamour stresses the importance of extension cords only being intended for temporary use and tells communities that it is not advisable to plug extension cords into other extension cords, as this could cause a fire.

Having knowledge of fire exits is important in case of emergencies. To optimize safety, Lieutenant DeSamour advises families to do fire drills, and make sure everyone in the house knows how to access a fire exit. It is also imperative to declutter one’s space and make sure that there are no items blocking any exits. Regularly testing smoke detectors, and having C02 or Carbon Monoxide detectors in your home to prevent Carbon Monoxide poisoning may save lives.

Watch the full Holiday/Winter Fire Safety podcast episode here.

Donate to the families of those deceased in the Philadelphia fire here.

Donate to the families of those deceased in the Bronx fire here.

Philadelphia families may be eligible to receive free smoke detectors and free installation from the City of Philadelphia. Learn more here.

Works Cited

https://www.inquirer.com/news/live/philadelphia-fire-fairmount-victims-cause-pha-updates-20220106.html

https://nypost.com/2022/01/09/nyc-fire-leaves-numerous-people-injured/

https://www.usfa.fema.gov/downloads/pdf/statistics/socio.pdf

This article is made in collaboration with Broke in Philly.

Nana Ama Addo is a writer, multimedia strategist, film director, and storytelling artist. Politicians, preachers, and civic and corporate leaders will make speeches about him leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott, founding the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and delivering his soaring “I Have A Dream” speech at the historic 1963 March on Washington. They will stress that he was a Southern-born Baptist minister, a civil rights leader committed to non-violence who changed America and that he was the 1964 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

In addition to the formal events on this 2022 MLK birthday celebration, commercialism will be on display. Shoppers in search of MLK sales at suburban malls will have the opportunity to experience gospel choir performances, and car dealers, insurance companies, and media outlets will feature ads commemorating Dr. King.

However, commercial or not, the nation’s recognition and pomp and circumstance of the day are deserved. It is important that in the midst of the national celebration of his life we don’t allow it to dim the memory of the photo at the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King lay dying on the balcony after being shot by an assassin in Memphis in 1968. And, we must remember he was killed by someone who was determined to use violence to silence the voice of a Black man dedicated to non-violence and who was seeking equality.

Also on this year’s day of commemoration, hopefully, we will not forget the question Dr. King directed to us, the beloved community, in his book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?. Written in 1967, Dr. King proffered, “We are now faced with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity… This may well be mankind’s last chance to choose between chaos or community.”

Written by Dr. King 55 years ago, these words feel as though the ink has not yet dried. How do we answer?

Karen Warrington has had a decades long career as a broadcast journalist, communications professional, performing artist, and documentary filmmaker. The Mummers Parade, the nation’s oldest folk festival of more than 120 years, begins at City Hall and continues south to Washington Avenue.

Judging for this non-professional competition takes place at 15th Street and John F. Every day when I went to class, I sat at the back with all the other girls, while the boys sat in the front row. Girls were given the old textbooks, whereas boys were given new textbooks. Also, when girls raised their hands to answer a question, most teachers would not call on them to respond.

The unfairness of this two-tiered system was lost on me at the time. As a girl in Bangladesh, I understood this not as inequality, but as a convention. It is an accepted practice to discriminate against girls when it comes to education, health, and economic opportunities. I did not have the faintest idea then that girls were marginalized in many aspects of life in Bangladesh. We were made to believe that it is okay for girls to have fewer opportunities. I was taught that I can’t have the same freedoms, resources, and opportunities as boys. As a result, a kind of inferiority complex took hold of me.

However, as I got older, I became more aware of this unequal circumstance. One time, I asked to participate in a knowledge competition, and one of the female teachers said, “You had better not compete with the boys, you won’t be able to win.”

“Really? Why?” I asked.

“Girls don’t have brains,” she said with a mocking tone. “Only boys are fit for the competition.”

I did not reply after that. I realized she had also been made to believe that girls are inferior in every aspect of life.

A few years later, after arriving in the United States, I enrolled in school. When I walked into the classroom for the first time, I lowered my head, found a place in the back of the room, and sat on the floor. I shuffled timidly and looked toward Ms. James. She pursed her lips and frowned. I panicked and asked myself, “Did I do something wrong? Was I disrespectful? Did I obey the rule?” My mind was racing.

“Umme, what are you doing?” she asked calmly.

I didn’t respond.

“Come sit at the front, next to Jack, okay?” She smiled and reached out her hand, pulling me forward and leading me to the first row to sit next to a boy, something I would never dream of doing back home. There, sitting at the front of the classroom, I felt an excited tingle in my stomach. This is where I wanted to be, this is where I belonged. At the front of the classroom, besides the boys and, of course, the girls.

That front-row seat made me more confident and more motivated to face challenges and opportunities that, in my homeland, I was made to believe were meant for boys only.

Read more from Umme Orthy:

It represented a beacon of hope, freedom, and a new start. In 2003, the year I was born, the dream started to become a reality when my maternal uncle, a US citizen, applied for an immigrant VISA. After thirteen years of processing, we finally got the VISA to come to the USA.

I knew being able to leave Bangladesh was a huge opportunity knocking at my door. Nonetheless, it felt like my soul was firmly attached to the soil of my motherland. I did not want to leave my country, but I knew I needed to go. I wept and wept, and at the airport, all of my relatives cried with me.

When the airplane took off from Bangladesh to the United States, the sweet memories of my former home flashed before me like a desolate farewell wave. I could not think of anything but my home, my sweet home, and the souls deeply attached to mine, now separated by thousands of miles. That day I wrote in my journal, "I feel numb. I don’t know how I could cope with the new culture, new people, new everything…" Or at least I think that’s what I wrote. The tear stains on the paper make it hard to read.

When we landed in the USA, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. The air around me was not the same as in Bangladesh. I could hear my dad having a conversation with my mom, "She has to take a test to attend school here". But I did not want to go to school here. I did not know anyone at my school. The entire environment was different. The people I was going to encounter were so different from me!

Despite my reluctance, I knew I had to go to school. Before class, I saw some students in the hall. The way they stared at me was scary. It was as if I were a felon who had escaped from prison. I said "Hey!" and introduced myself. I sighed, thinking I did okay. Then, someone giggled and pointed at my clothes, which was greeted with a supportive chuckle from her friends. Then, another boy mimicked my accent with exaggerated hand gestures, receiving even greater support. Before long, the whole class was engulfed by laughter. Someone shouted, "Look at her! What is that thing on her head?” They were talking about my hijab. Someone even tried to pull it off. I could feel tears forming in my eyes, but I bit my lip and said nothing.

Leaving mathribumi, my motherland, was difficult. Even more painful, was acclimating to the new environment, new people, and the new culture. But those difficulties in my life taught me something new altogether. When I got back home and shared my bitter experiences with my mother, she smiled and took me to her shoulders and said, “Dear, accept the beauty in differences. The land we live in now is a land of multicultural and multilingual entities. People from diverse cultural backgrounds have made this country truly great and beautiful. We are beautiful not only in our similarities but also in our differences. Don’t be cowed down by the negativity of others. Just remember, what makes us different, makes us beautiful”.

Now I know I am what I am. It did not matter that this was a new country. It did not matter that I did not know the customs or language. It did not matter that people thought less of me because of my traditional clothing. In fact, I have become a stronger person because of it.

It does not matter what hardships I face; I know I am capable and worthy.

Original article published at FunTimes Magazine
urn:uuid:113bc8fa-ca73-4e62-af8f-a8ec09d429d82021-12-23T11:40:45-05:002021-12-30T14:20:34-05:00Holiday Shop Talk2021-12-23 15:00:00 -0500Fun Times Magazine
December is National Small Business Month (NationalSmallBusinessMonth.com), and this week is Christmas crunch time.
