Since then space activity has delivered many benefits. For instance, satellite imagery can be used in agriculture to predict food shortages and surplus harvests. It can also be used to forecast and monitor natural disasters like flooding.

In recognition of this, by the second decade of the 21st century, more than 50 countries had space agencies, or other government bodies, carrying out space activities.

Some African countries are also making their mark. The continent’s evolving space sector is reportedly worth USD$400 billion today.

Various experts from across the continent have published articles on The Conversation Africa, revealing the hopes, needs and achievements of Africa’s space ambitions. Here are five insightful reads.

Outer space programme is key to meeting Africa’s needs

Recognising the importance of outer space, Agenda 2063 – part of Africa’s development blueprint, put together by the African Union – includes an Africa outer space programme. It focuses on Earth observation, meteorology, satellite communication, satellite navigation and astronomy. Etim Offiong, an expert from the Scientific Officer at the African Regional Centre for Space Science, argues that Africa’s outer space programme is integral to meeting many needs that African countries have.

Achievements of the Cape’s astronomers

In some African countries, astronomical research is quite developed. South African astronomy, for instance, is at the forefront of many initiatives and discoveries. The South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town is the oldest permanent observatory in the southern hemisphere: it turned 200 in 2020.

Astronomer Ian Glass reveals just how much Cape astronomers have achieved. They were responsible for, among other things, the first measurement of the distance to a star; the first photographic sky survey and the accurate measurement of the distance to the sun.

Image: Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory, Kuntunse. Source: Ghana Space Science and Technology Institute

Africa’s nanosatellites

One landmark moment for African space science happened on 13 January 2022 when The Cape Peninsula University of Technology, based in Cape Town, launched its third satellite mission into space. The nanosatellite constellation, consisting of three satellites - called MDASat (Marine Domain Awareness) – was launched from the Cape Canaveral rocket launch site in Florida in the US.

Space engineer, Nyameko Royi, who works on the project, reveals that these small satellites collect data that will enhance the security and protection of South African marine resources. They do this by monitoring and identifying foreign vessels within the country’s exclusive economic zone.

Strides made by Senegal

Senegal has also made great strides in astronomy and planetary sciences in recent years. Dozens of scientists from NASA and France, along with five tons of astronomical equipment descended on Dakar, Senegal in August 2018. They joined 21 Senegalese scientists in an important mission: collecting precious data in preparation for the flyby of an asteroid called Ultima Thule on January 2019. The project marked the first time Senegal was involved in a space mission to explore our solar system.

Geologist, David Baratoux, explains why Senegal was chosen to be involved in a space mission to explore our solar system.

The moves Ghana is making

Ghana is another country that’s making moves in the space sector. The government has made a bid to host the African Union’s planned Space Agency and The Ghana Space Science & Technology Institute has been established to train specialists and to convert space research into commercial applications. It’s also a participant in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope project.

But, argues legal expert Julia Selman Ayetey, to harness the full benefits of space technology Ghana needs space legislation and regulations.

Related articles:

In our lifetime, we go through numerous relationships, from family to friends, acquaintances, and romantic relationships. Each one needs certain vital ingredients to be sustained at the level they are at, with hopes of a brighter future of connectivity.

At FunTimes, we support the sustenance of good and great relationships! However, it is not worth it to force yourself to stay in a relationship/friendship nearing its end.

Here are five (5) signs that it might be time to say goodbye to your relationship:

(1) There is too much baggage than you are willing to bear

Everyone has a bit of baggage that they bring to the table due to our different upbringings and life experiences before meeting. When you connect with people, you are willing to accept and face the ‘emotional baggage’ they carry. There is also a willingness to accept them how they are and for who they are.

If you find yourself less and less discouraged to assist your partner/friend with their baggage, or even judging them or resenting them for the stress it is putting on you to deal with it, then this is a sign there is trouble in paradise. What you previously enjoyed doing now comes across as a chore, and that negativity will rear its ugly head in how you treat your partner/friend, and no one deserves intentionally poor treatment. Be prepared to address the situation or be ready to let go of the relationship.

(2) Situations and circumstances change

Change is constant. However, what could be more stable is how different individuals react and adapt to change. It could be that you and your partner/friend had more of a stronger connection when both of you met, and things were going well. Now, you may be in a phase of your life that has nothing to do with them (or vice versa), and that means that you both must work extra hard to keep the spark alive. It could also be that one or both of you does not have the mental strength to put in the extra effort, which means that both relationships have hit a standstill. If it means that much to either of you, you both should put in the work to make it last; however, if neither of you is willing, gear up to say goodbye.

(3) You both do not include yourselves in future plans

A key factor of people who are built to last is that they always include each other in their future. So, if your partner/friend makes no specific intention or plans to include you in where they see their life going, then this is a sign of the end times in your relationship. It could be that their future is evolving, and both of you cannot seem to find common ground anymore, but even the most demanding situations should have a mid-point. If they cannot even see you beyond the next day, ask yourself what the point is. Find ways to reconnect with your person and see if they are making accommodations for you in their future or if it is a lost cause, and it is better for everyone to separate before things become volatile.

(4) You find yourself more interested in other people

There are many interesting people in the world, and it is almost impossible not to appreciate the beauty and intellect of others. However, it becomes extreme if you find others more attractive or enjoyable than your partner/friend. Doing this may devalue your relationship with them by valuing one of the others above it. It is a sign that whatever drew you to each other – whatever spark – is diminishing and needs rekindling. Innocent fantasizing and attraction can be harmless, but intentional flirting and attraction are harmful. There is no need to string anyone alone because of the past you share; let them know it is time to cut up loose ends.

(5) Your gut feeling tells you it is time to admit defeat

There is a reason the old saying ‘trust your gut feeling’ is still going strong today. A gut feeling or reaction is based on an instinctive emotional response rather than considered thought. Sometimes, trusting your gut feeling can help you make the right decision by paying attention to how your body reacts to the situation. Granted, we live in our bodies, so we respond to situations based on our understanding and experiences. Still, it is a good gauge of whether you feel safe in your body.

It is hard to love your partner/friend when every instinct tells you it is time to give up. You cannot ignore feelings of negativity and discomfort around making the relationship work, so try to let it go. The same if you are on the receiving end of a partner/friend who has given up on you based on their gut instinct. No need to spend endless nights going back and forth with your emotions when your rational mind has already made its decision.

Related articles:

Unfortunately, these precious resources are threatened by several factors, including habitat deterioration, poaching, and climate change. It is critical to protect and preserve African animals and ecosystems, not just for ethical reasons but also for the long-term viability of the planet.

The primary danger to African wildlife and ecosystems is the destruction of their habitats. As human populations increase, there is an escalating demand for land for agriculture, mining, and other purposes, which reduces habitat for many animal species. This impacts the animals and interrupts the balance of entire ecosystems, resulting in reduced biodiversity and the disappearance of critical ecosystem services, such as fresh air and water.

Climate change is also a significant menace to African wildlife and ecosystems. Increasing temperatures, fluctuating rainfall patterns, and other climate-related factors result in substantial disturbances to African ecosystems, including shifts in migration patterns, modifications in vegetation, and a heightened probability of wildfires. This, in turn, jeopardizes numerous animal species' survival and endangers entire ecosystems.

Rhinos at Kruger National Park, South Africa. These creatures are targeted for their tusks and horns, highly valued in various cultures for their supposed medicinal and other properties. Poaching endangers not only the survival of these species but also supports organized crime and instability in many parts of Africa.

Preserving and safeguarding African wildlife and ecosystems are crucial to ensure their survival for future generations. This can include various activities, such as securing habitats, managing wildlife, and raising public awareness. Protected areas, such as national parks and wildlife reserves, play an essential role in conserving African ecosystems and wildlife, providing a secure haven for numerous species and enabling them to thrive.

Efficient conservation and protection strategies also necessitate the participation of local communities, who frequently depend on natural resources for their livelihoods. Photo by Mikhail Nilov

When the computer game Hogwarts Legacy was released in February 2023, some critics wondered whether the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling – whose Harry Potter franchise inspired the game – would hurt sales.

Those supporting the trans community had called for a boycott of the game.

The British author has become a bête noire of many people in the trans community, repeatedly expressing and supporting views like the unfounded belief that trans women are a danger to cis women.

Nevertheless, the game, which gives players the opportunity to be young wizards making their way in the Potterverse, has proved immensely popular, selling north of 12 million copies in the two weeks after its launch. It’s already sold more units than the bestselling game of 2022, and it’s seen as a serious contender for the Game Awards’ Game of the Year.

But as a social scientist who studies gaming subcultures, I’ve been particularly interested in Hogwarts Legacy’s large following among Black gamers, who, like millions of others, seem more than willing to overlook the calls to boycott the title.

‘That wizard game’

In 2017, Rowling infamously supported social media posts seen as transphobic. Some fans wanted to know whether her beliefs were misconstrued or if she herself actually held anti-trans views.

Since then, she’s doubled down on her beliefs, penning a long post replete with stereotypes: that the trans movement is a “cover to predators,” and that it’s “seeking to erode ‘woman’ as a political and biological class.” Her refusal to reconsider these views has drawn the ire of queer communities and their allies, and Rowling’s supporters and detractors routinely spar on social media.

When Warner Bros. Games announced in September 2020 that it would be producing Hogwarts Legacy, those angry about Rowling encouraged gamers to refrain from purchasing the title.

While Rowling didn’t make the game or offer any developmental input, some LGBTQ activists believed that the game’s success would signal a tacit acceptance of her views on gender. Some of them even refuse to reference the game by its name, instead calling “that wizard game.”

‘Black folks done took over Hogwarts’

While the enthusiastic response to the game may have dismayed some activists, I saw it as a testament to the powerful draw of the franchise, which has attracted millions of fans through books, movies, apparel and theme parks over the past 25 years.

In the game, players assume the role of a new student at Hogwarts School, where they learn magic before putting on the famous “sorting hat” and embarking upon a shadowy quest to earn the respect of their instructors.

The love of this world – and the nostalgia it evokes – seems to supersede the problematic views of the creator.

And yet the game’s popularity among Black gamers might come as a surprise.

The Harry Potter books always had a broad legion of fans. Many American students – including Black students – were introduced to the Potterverse in their school years and retained a love for the characters and their adventures.

While J.K. Rowling included a handful of characters who were people of color in her books, their scant representation could be read as tokenism, at best. And long before the trans controversy, some Harry Potter fans criticized Rowling for what I call “hindsight representation”: long after the books were published, Rowling claimed that certain characters were of different ethnicities or sexual orientations, without directly highlighting their diversity in the texts.

Nonetheless, gaming boards dedicated to Black gamers were abuzz after the release. The game has gained such a foothold in the Black gaming community that one Facebook commenter triumphantly announced that “Black folks done took over Hogwarts and turned it into an HBCU” – a reference to historically Black colleges and universities.

Image: Still from the promotional trailer for the game. Source: Wikimedia Commons

Gaining a foothold in a white male world

Gaming subcultures have long been what sociologist Eric Dunning calls “male preserves” – spaces dominated by men. These spaces are not necessarily exclusionary; women and minorities can freely take part.

But if you aren’t a white man, it’s important to adhere to the norms and expectations in order to be accepted into the community.

Communication scholar Mia Consalvo has written about how gamers work to acquire what she calls “gamer capital” – expertise, slang and accomplishments that reflect status in gaming subcultures. The requisite benchmarks, the language used and the knowledge that’s valued have traditionally been dictated and determined by white men.

So in order to gain clout within gaming networks, gamers tend to downplay their race, gender or sexuality. And because of a default thinking that the gamer on the other side of the screen is a white male – and a prevalence of games that historically ignore issues of race, gender and sexuality – diversity in the gaming world can be easily erased.

For these reasons, it’s been easy to ignore or dismiss the presence of minority gamers, and Black gamers often struggle to be seen.

In recent years, however, that’s started to change.

In games like Forspoken and Dungeons & Dragons, developers have prioritized different genders, races and ethnicities to acknowledge the diversity of players. In the newest edition of Dungeons & Dragons, for example, the image of “human” for the race descriptions is a Black woman. In Forspoken, gamers play as Frey, a young Black girl from New York.

And this is related to what I see happening in Hogwarts Legacy. Many Black players are applauding the game’s character creator, which offers a great deal of flexibility in making avatars. In particular, those who want to play as Black characters have a vast range of skin colors, hairstyles and hair textures to choose from – choices most digital games lack.

As scholars like Kimberly Moffitt have pointed out, hair is a central element of African American identity. Complex and thoughtful options for hairstyles in video games represent a significant shift in the recognition of Black gamers – one that challenges the kind of erasure in gaming subcultures that my research has identified.

Separating the work from the creator

How does this square with Rowling’s transphobia, and the calls to boycott the video game?

And, does this speak to the age-old belief from political science that Black Americans are socially conservative and therefore more likely to overlook homophobia or transphobia?

I would say no.

Black popular culture has a complicated relationship with the separation of artists from their work. Disgraced luminaries like R. Kelly, Kanye West and Michael Jackson generate sometimes paradoxical associations for Black people: They’re iconic Black artists who, in their personal lives, have committed crimes or expressed hateful ideas.

So many Black gamers are primed to separate Hogwarts Legacy from Rowling, particularly since the game makes huge strides in representation.

Furthermore, research overwhelmingly shows that a large majority of younger Black Americans are not socially conservative.

So in my view, their desire to be represented in games that have long excluded them serves a broader goal that likely outweighs any negative feelings toward Rowling.

Related articles:

Media portrayals are often hyperbolic and sensationalized to attract public attention. Equally troubling is that the majority of academic research in this area also perpetuates many of the same, negative patterns that are common in popular culture.

As a graduate student and university professor, I have spent nearly two decades reviewing these studies on Black men and families. The general consensus from them falls into one of two categories: first, that many Black men are not viable marriage mates because their financial struggles will not allow them to provide for a wife and children.

Other studies conclude that many poor Black men reject monogamous romantic relationships in favor of a hypersexual masculinity to overcompensate for their inability to fulfill the traditional breadwinner role. These men, the studies conclude, treat women as conquests rather than partners.

In both historical and more recent research, studies on Black men have disproportionately examined the lives of low-income men and the struggles they faced in maintaining stable relationships in the face of economic disadvantage.

I have found that the near-exclusive focus on low-income Black men in research related to the family skews perceptions of these men. It also limits the public’s knowledge of them and the meanings they attach to their romantic relationships. And this perception can be used to perpetuate negative stereotypes that frame them as dangerous and predatory.

Resetting the image

In response to that limited view, I spent the last four years conducting a study on a more diverse group of Black men to learn more about their perspectives on marriage.

The men’s stories reveal important findings that are typically not explored in research on Black men. They opened up about their desire for intimacy and companionship in their relationships.

My findings, many of which are counter to the popular image that our society holds of Black men, have just been published in a book, “Black Love Matters: Authentic Men’s Voices on Marriage and Romantic Relationships.”

My study followed 33 Black men from Louisville, Kentucky, chronicling their personal circumstances, as well as their attitudes, experiences and behaviors within their marriages and romantic relationships. The data for the study were collected from over 150 hours of interviews with the men.

The men I interviewed ranged in age from 18 to 72. They represented a variety of relationship statuses, with men reporting being single, romantically involved, married, divorced and remarried. The men were also diverse in their educational attainment. Some had graduate and professional degrees, while others had high school diplomas and GEDs. The men also varied in their economic situations, with annual incomes ranging from $0 to US$175,000.

In sharing their experiences, the men provided an in-depth look into their love lives. Their discussions touched on many important factors that have shaped their past and current relationships.

They reflected on how they met their partners and the characteristics that made them stand out from previous partners. The men described their ideal marriage mate and shared what marriage means to them.

In discussing what attracted him to his wife, one man stated, “She wasn’t phony. She was comfortable being herself, she wasn’t trying to impress anybody. So it made me learn to be comfortable being myself.”

Photo by Eric Froehling on Unsplash

‘The most important decision’

In the interviews, many of the men credit their partners with making them better husbands, fathers and men. According to one of the participants, “I always tell her that I couldn’t have become who I am without her. Meeting the right person, to stand with the right person is probably the most important decision I’ve made in my life.”

The men even recognize the ways their relationships serve to combat the negative perception that often surrounds Black men.

“The media portrays us as shiftless and violent and not to be trusted. I think when you see a man with a woman treating her well, a man with his children treating them the way they should be treated, it dispels a lot of what folks see in the media. Just seeing positive men doing what men should do is a good thing,” said one man.

Most often, the men talked about how the unique characteristics that set their mate apart from others they had dated.

In explaining what attracted him to his wife, one man stated, “I think just how she was able to articulate to me who she was and how she shared some of my values when it comes to children and relationships. It’s just how she carries herself. Her presence made me want to be with her and I never had another woman make me feel like that.”

However, many of these men said they struggle with previous traumas that challenge their relationships. A detective alluded to the psychological stress he faced in being a Black man having to police his community at a time of distrust and unrest, only to come home and have to be emotionally available for his wife.

In one of his interviews, he stated, “I try not to let the stress bother me, but it’s still one of those things. It just does. Sometimes I’m really withdrawn because I’m thinking about things at work or I’m always working. When it happens, I’ve got to put myself in check.”

Another man wrestled with the realization that many of his former girlfriends had a striking resemblance to a babysitter who abused him as a child.

Haunted by failures

In discussing their fears and insecurities, many of the men acknowledge being guarded with their emotions as a result of some of their early experiences.

Even when they were able to move beyond early negative experiences, many of the men discussed feeling haunted by their friends and family members’ failed relationships.

In these cases, the men expressed concern that their relationships would not last. As one participant said, “I don’t know that many people of color have seen marriage modeled very well.”

Yet over and over again, in the interviews, men told how they would strive to maintain their relationships in the face of myriad internal and external challenges including racism and early negative relationship experiences.

Given the lack of research on Black men featuring firsthand accounts from them, “Black Love Matters” represents a departure from previous work that seems to be preoccupied with implicating Black men in discussions of what ails their families and communities.

In lifting up the men’s voices, “Black Love Matters” shifts the focus away from talking about Black men and instead talks to them about how they love and want to be loved.

Related articles:

Every culture had an impact on this technological period. So, do you believe the African diaspora would have been left behind? Certainly not. This is where Afrofuturism enters the picture.

Afrofuturism is a cultural trend that has gained popularity in recent decades. It is a future vision based on Black people's experiences, traditions, and ambitions. An African diaspora-based movement strives to investigate the link between technology, science, and culture from a Black viewpoint. Afrofuturism evolved in the late twentieth century as African artists, authors, and intellectuals began to consider the possibilities of a future in which Black people play a crucial role in defining technology, science, and society. Afrofuturism is fundamentally about visualizing a better future for Black people. It is about building a community where Black people actively determine the future rather than passive consumers of technology and science. It is a method for Black people to regain agency and power in a world that has traditionally denied it to them.

George Clinton performing in 2009. It's no secret that technology plays a crucial role in shaping our understanding and approach to the future, and Afrofuturism harnesses this cultural instrument to create truly unique and thought-provoking works. From music to visual art to film, the skills are a powerful platform for afro futuristic expression, captivating audiences and pushing boundaries.

The trailblazing blockbuster success "Black Panther" (2018), directed by Ryan Coogler, is one of the most notable instances of Afrofuturism in film. The film takes place in the fictional African nation of Wakanda, presented as a technologically advanced culture that remains concealed from the rest of the world. The film's blend of future technology and African cultural allusions gained critical praise and economic success, propelling it to the box office. Other significant Afrofuturistic films include Jordan Peele's "Get Out" (2017), which tackles themes of race and identity in a horror environment, and Boots Riley's "Sorry to Bother You" (2018), which satirizes corporate culture and capitalism utilizing science fiction tropes.

"Serengeti Cyborg," an artistic depiction of Afrofuturism by Fanuel Leul. It is a tremendous future vision with the ability to change the world we live in. Afrofuturism provides a potent antidote to the racism, injustice, and inequality that continue to afflict our society by creating a future in which Black people are free, empowered, and in charge.

Afrofuturism is a daring and essential movement in a society that has frequently ignored and excluded Black people from influencing the future. It encourages us to envisage a better future for all of us, not just Black people. It reminds us that our future is not preset but that we can actively influence and create it. As we move forward, let us embrace the imaginative spirit of Afrofuturism and collaborate to create a more fair, equitable, and inclusive society for everyone.

Related articles:

Source: Wikmedia Commons

US icon Serena Williams, considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, is retiring from professional tennis. Williams has won 23 grand slam singles titles, more than any other woman or man during the professional era, which began in 1968. Coached by her father, she changed the face of the women’s game. In the process, through speaking frankly about her life and career, she became a role model for many black women around the world. Tennis Kenya secretary general and former player Wanjiru Mbugua Karani recently said: “Serena has been the ‘be-all’ for African tennis, and especially for girls in Africa.” We asked Kenyan political sociologist and gender expert Awino Okech what lessons can be learned for African women in sports when reflecting on Williams’ career.

1. Public investment in sport pays off

The story of Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams, a fellow star player, is not one of privilege. Serena’s success was initially nurtured at an old public tennis court in her neighbourhood. Her father gathered resources where he could find them to skill his daughters when he saw potential in tennis.

Across sections of Africa, we see the public divestment in sports through land grabs with public parks converted into office buildings and apartments, thus limiting space for recreation and sports. Secondly, the privatisation of sporting facilities limits public access as people have to pay to use them. Thirdly, the under-resourcing of public schools results in limited, if any, investment in sporting facilities. The result is a class divide that writes out most young Africans from sporting opportunities. African governments need to make greater investments in public sports facilities and programmes targeting girls particularly in contexts where sports is not viewed as a viable career option.

2. Racism in sport must be eliminated

Serena and Venus Williams’ importance to world tennis lies in their being outliers in a sport that has been historically dominated by white women and men. Consequently, Serena’s iconic stature as a tennis star has been coloured by the gender and racial dynamics that have shaped her treatment in the sport. She was subjected to descriptions around her masculinity, aggression, and her power as a player. These are broader racialised tropes that link Black people to savagery and whiteness to evolved humanity. In the visual and verbal descriptions of Serena in the public media, we saw the use of historically racialised tropes of the angry Black woman and animalistic caricatures by the media and social media users. This was intended to diminish her capabilities through psychological warfare.

Anti-Black racism in sport has been the subject of public debates and investigations. One study revealed that Black football players who missed penalties were the most abused players in the Euro 2020 championship final stage.

In Serena’s case, these experiences sit at the intersection of gender and race. All women share the experience of sexism – from pay disparities to the lack of attention to women’s sports compared to men’s. However, the combination of race and gender doubles the battle that Serena Williams and other international athletes like South African sprinting champion Caster Semenya must contend with. Serena took a stand. She withdrew from and boycotted events such as the BNP Paribas Open in California because of racial slurs from the crowd.

The race problem in sports – which becomes visible through online abuse, spectator behaviour and overall sports management – is reflective of a broader problem. The anti-Black character of racism experienced by Serena will not be solved by more representation of Black women but by a systemic reckoning that challenges how race and gender disparities are entrenched in the DNA of competitive sport.

Related articles:

We need to talk about mental health in women’s sport

Sexism and racism accompanied by the intense public scrutiny in competitive sport have drawn attention to the critical question of mental health. We are now witnessing a generation of younger athletes such as Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka and US gymnastics champion Simone Biles taking a stand. They have at times chosen mental wellbeing over participating in high pressured competitions. Serena Williams has played an important role in creating the space for a tennis player like Osaka to speak out.

These acts of courage take place in an environment in which a discussion on mental wellbeing is construed as weakness. They focus attention on a neglected area in sports, the need for a holistic health system that supports the pressure cooker environment of elite sports. The case of Kenyan middleweight boxer Conjestina Achieng, the first African woman to hold an international boxing title, is illustrative. Achieng, who was diagnosed with mental illness, has been failed by a broader public health system. One that allocates too few resources to training mental health experts and providing specialist services in public hospitals.

The limited options available for athletes in the global south points to the destruction of public health systems due to privatisation. In Kenya, for example, failed public healthcare is a legacy of policies promoting historical inequality which continue under the veneer of public private partnerships. A conversation about mental health in sports is fundamentally a public policy discussion about economic investment in health systems.

4. Sportswomen deserve a more secure future

Serena’s exit from tennis is accompanied by a financial exit strategy – Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. The financial security built of decades of success in a sport does not translate in the same way in contexts shaped by vast economic disparities. Serena’s context shows what needs to change.

In Kenya, coupled with the pressures of competitive sport, women athletes are also dealing with the silence around intimate partner violence in the sports fraternity – highlighted by the murders of athletes Agnes Tirop and Damaris Muthee.

There are three interlocked issues here. The first is the absence of strong financial advice and support to athletes over the course of their careers. The second is the vast societal inequalities that create undue pressure on young athletes who come into money to support their families financially. Finally, the combination of class and gender demands that femicide and intimate partner violence are taken as seriously by sports associations as they do anti-doping campaigns.

Serena Williams’ journey of excellence and fortitude also shines a light on the negative outcomes that sit at the intersection of race, gender and class in sports specifically and society generally. As we hail the “Greatest of All Time”, African governments must take heed of the structural shifts required in our sports arena.

Related articles:

This isn’t new knowledge to those who started online connections and are yet to live together.

However, it is very jarring to people who are new to it and are currently at their wit’s end. Some statistics show that the average success rate of a long-distance relationship is 58%.

At FunTimes, we aim to increase this percentage and give couples who genuinely love each other a fighting chance. A key to maintaining a positive and healthy relationship is concentrating on staying connected and intimate!

Here are 5 (five) sure ways to increase intimacy with your partner, whether you are new to long distance and struggling or used to long distance and looking for new ways to spice things up.

(1) Virtually keep in touch

Most people worldwide have a phone, making communication easier through phone calls, video calls, social media, etc. At the barest of minimums, all mobile phones have calling and texting capacities, so make an effort to call or message your partner at least once daily.

It will be a check-in to communicate that you care about them and their day. It will also give them a chance to receive love from you miles away and be reminded that though they are out of sight, they are not out of mind. This can make a world of difference in how secure your partner feels in your life.

(2) Make a relationship bucket list

We all should think about the future occasionally, and openly adding your partner to your plans can reaffirm that commitment. No one knows tomorrow, but we plan as though we do, and you and your partner should create a relationship bucket list.

Even if you don’t see them so far into the future in terms of years, at least do you see them with you on your next birthday? Good, then plan toward that. Take baby steps when you feel comfortable and include them.

This gesture will also help rekindle new hope and excitement in the relationship because there is so much to look forward to you and new ways for the relationship to grow.

(3) Send thoughtful gifts/gestures

We all have different love languages, but gift-giving has a higher chance of being well received. It could be due to commercializing holidays and events, but the average person knows that society has a gift-giving culture. This should be the same just because your partner is miles away.

More importantly, what you give as a gift is of utmost importance. It could be a physical gift you send them, such as your favorite perfume, so they always remember what you smell like. Or it could be the gift of your time where you inconvenience yourself to get that extra time with them. It could be the gift of acknowledging all they do and how hard they work so they don’t feel undervalued. It is crucial to find out what your partner appreciates as a gift and show them love through that.

(4) Have silent phone/video calls

One of the biggest things people miss out on in long-distance relationships is the silent moments. Couples tend to be apart, so when they meet up via phone or in person, they talk, do, or create an action due to missed moments.

However, comfortable silence is a form of communication in most relationships. If you want to create more normalcy between you and your partner, schedule ‘silence calls’ where you both do individual things while spending time together – as one would if they lived with their partner.

(5) Send photos/videos

We live in a very visual age; one thing to capitalize on is the sense of sight in these relationships. It could be anything from a photo of yourself waking up, one going about your day, or a steamy photo to raise temperatures. Showing off yourself communicates how confident you are in your body and skin, which will be well received by a partner who loves you the way you are.

This is working with the understanding that both partners are not visually impaired. Work with the other senses if one or both are visually impaired. Find time to call your partner and describe how you would look and feel if they were next to you. Things don’t have to be seen to be appreciated; verbally communicating and painting a picture is just as exciting.

Last but not least, plan a physical meeting between you and your partner where you can spend time with each other. This will depend on each other’s finances and schedules, but where there is love, there will be a way, as the aim is to be in each other’s arms and brave the world together.

Good luck!

Related articles:

The religion and body of Christian churches and denominations in the United States primarily cater to Black Americans, and their collective traditions and adherents are referred to as the Black church. Individual congregations may sometimes be referred to as "Black churches." For persons of African origin, the Black church has functioned as a beacon of resilience, spirituality, and social strength, building a sense of community and justice. In this blog, we will examine the function of the Black church in diverse African diaspora groups to determine its relevance and effect.

The history of the Black church may be traced back to when enslaved Africans were forcibly carried to the Americas, including North and South America and the Caribbean. Africans took refuge in their faith and spirituality despite the anguish of enslavement and the loss of their cultural heritage. They developed their distinctive forms of Christianity, fusing African customs with Christian teachings, and established their worship communities. Amid persecution, these early Black churches were places where Africans could openly express their faith, retain their cultural identity, and feel community.

A Sunday Morning View of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas in Philadelphia._Taken in June 1829. Drawn on stone by W.L. Black churches such as the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, the National Baptist Convention, and the Church of God in Christ were hotbeds of activism and social justice, producing renowned leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. These churches acted as places of worship, as well as centers of organization and strategy for civil rights and equality, laying the way for substantial social and political reforms in the United States.

The church offered solace and sanctuary to a community that had endured the horrors of slavery and racism for generations. It was a haven where Black individuals could affirm their identity, receive education, find emotional and spiritual support, and foster a sense of hope for a brighter future. The church served as a symbolic space where enslaved and free Black people could hold onto their faith and believe in a better tomorrow.

Image: African Americans outside of a church, c.1900. To meet the unique requirements of African diaspora groups, several Black churches have developed schools, healthcare facilities, and social activities. These projects sought to increase access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, empowering individuals and communities to thrive. The Black church has also played an essential role in developing self-sufficiency and economic self-determination through supporting entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and economic empowerment.

The Black church has stood as a beacon of faith, resilience, and empowerment for the African diaspora, from its origins in the history of slavery to its present-day role in promoting social justice, community development, and cultural preservation. It has served as a vital space where Africans have been able to maintain their cultural heritage, express their faith, and foster community bonds in the face of adversity. Through its advocacy for civil rights, production of leaders, and promotion of empowerment, the Black church has been a catalyst for social change. However, it has also faced challenges and must continue to address issues such as cultural preservation, inclusivity, and social justice. As we reflect on the profound history and significance of the Black church in the African diaspora, we are reminded of its enduring legacy as a source of hope, resilience, and empowerment for present and future generations.
