Eric Grimes
Eric Grimes, the Host of The Shomari Show (WURD 900), and the Director of Root Cause LLC is a proud alumni of Morehouse College. As an activist, speaker and educator whose primary focus is to elevate the consciousness and transformative learning experiences for those committed in overcoming social injustice.
Grimes strongly believes being an HBCU alumni means setting the bar high on his own expectations. Grimes is passionate about his contribution to the world, and particularly to the growth and development of Black society.
Speaking to FunTimes recently in an interview, Grimes had this to say:
What does HBCU mean to you and how has your experience impacted what you do in the community?
I was not fully aware of HBCUs and their history or purpose until my Math teacher, a White man at Central High School, told me that I was “too smart” to waste my time going to one. Through the compliment/insult, I made up my mind at that time that I would be attending an HBCU, whatever that was, and it was just a matter of finding the right one! Through my research and the input of many around me, I chose Morehouse College. Attending the school that produced Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., among many other history makers and achievers, set the bar high for my expectations about what I was to contribute to the world and particularly to Black people’s position in the world!
How can HBCUs be better?
HBCUs have to not only focus on history and tradition but also define what it means to be a Current/Contemporary Black College and University (CBCU). I believe that this not only means an enhanced focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM), but also a clear and laser sharp intention on their role in preparing Black graduates to contribute to the development of the Global Afrikan Diaspora toward Power, unapologetically!
