8 Black-Owned Vegan Bakeries To Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

We all crave a sweet treat every now and then. Veganism was once looked down upon in the Black community, but more and more Black families are becoming vegan due to the amazing health benefits of a plant-based diet.  Looking for a great vegan bakery where you can order awesome vegan desserts, cookies, cakes, cupcakes, pies, donuts, muffins, cinnamon rolls, and more? From specialty vegan cookies to sweet Southern favorites, these Black-owned vegan bakeries across the US keep hungry patrons coming back for more. 



1. Like Mom’s Only Vegan


Helmed by Naomi Sams and her mother Sakile Chenzira, Sams’ four children also work for the bakery in brand identity and communications, production and sales, and administration and accounting. Vegan for over 20 years, Sams raised her children vegan and always ensured they could partake in their friends and family’s birthday celebrations with their plant-based treats. Although the bakery is based in Cincinnati, they offer a variety of cookies for nationwide shipping. With flavors like Rocky Road, Almond Butter Chocolate Chip, and Lemon Lavender, there’s something for everyone (including gluten-free foodies).


 


2. The Vegan Doughnut Company

Sisters Kharisma and Kyra Mayo grew up watching their dad bake cakes, and it wasn't long before they wanted to channel their creativity in the kitchen. They opened our first storefront in the heart of Downtown Lakewood in December 2018. The Vegan Doughnut Company. is Ohio's first and only 100% vegan doughnut shop. The sisters were vegetarians for a long time before deciding to become vegan in 2014. Expect out-of-the-box flavors like lemon lavender, hibiscus, and hot chocolate topped with vegan marshmallows. Along with their extensive stock of inventive yeast-raised doughnuts, they also create rich cake-based varieties.

3. Southern Roots Vegan Bakery


After the husband and wife team, Marcus and Cara Pitts, adopted a plant-based lifestyle, Cara was determined to recreate her favorite dishes and desserts, without animal products, and earn her grandmother’s stamp of approval. She took to the kitchen, and through trial and error, Cara whipped up a dreamy vegan doughnut that her grandmother, friends, and family couldn’t get enough of. Southern Roots Vegan Bakery is a family-run, black-owned company that takes pride in crafting delicious, 100% vegan versions of Southern classics. Their handcrafted treats are made from the finest, ethically-sourced ingredients, ensuring quality and taste without compromise.


 


4. Brown Sugar Baking Company


Brown Sugar Baking Company is a 100% Plant Based, Organic, Tree-Nut & Peanut Free Specialty Baked Goods Company. They offer delicious sweet and savory treats made with locally sourced, organic & non-GMO, preservative-free ingredients. Chef and owner Lillian Hill has created delicious treats such as Chocolate Açai Cake, Pumpkin Squash Spice Cake with a hint of Maple Creme, and Strawberry-Filled Lemon Glazed Breakfast Croissants.

5. Sweet Vegan Bakes


Cheryl Nelson owns Sweet Vegan Bakes she started the baker when she became began living a vegan lifestyle, lost 118 pounds, obtained quality life insurance, and all her health issues vanished. That weight loss journey eventually led Cheryl to leave her job as a professor and VP of a healthcare organization to become a full-time Vegan Chef and entrepreneur. Their baked goods are made freshly every day with the finest, most delicious, local ingredients. Sweet Vegan Bakes specializes in plant-based desserts and other foods with gluten-free options. The menu has sweet items such as cupcakes, cookies, and cake slices, as well as savory foods such as wraps, sandwiches, and salads.


 

6. Cloudy Donut Co. 


This vegan doughnut shop is in New York City’s Brooklyn Heights and Baltimore, Maryland. The first Black-owned food and beverage business in the neighborhood, Cloudy Donut Co. slings pillowy-soft doughnuts in rotating flavors that range from Boston Cream and Powdered Jelly to Grapefruit Mimosa and Mango Chili Lime. Faulcon bought the shop that would become Cloudy Donut in 2019, in Baltimore. He, and his business partner and shop operator, Zewiditu Jewel, rebranded the shop where they produce over 40 vegan doughnut flavors.

7. Devi’s Donuts and Sweets


Devi’s Donuts and Sweets is a beautiful family-owned business selling vegan donuts and sweets that opened in 2016. The owners, Tulasi and Eva Ognibene named the bakery after his daughter, Vrinda. The name in Sanskrit means Queen or Goddess. Before coming to Long Beach, Tom and Eva were vegetarian and had been since birth. For six years, the couple had been operating their business at several farmer's markets in Long Beach.


 


8. Estella's Vegan Dessert Boutique


Chef, food educator, and owner of Estella's Vegan Dessert Boutique, Chantele Jones, has made it her mission to spread the plant-based lifestyle and its many health benefits. She holds a degree in Culinary Arts and her goal is to dispel myths that following a vegan diet is expensive, complicated, and flavorless. Her cookbook, Our Vegan Family Favorites, is her latest venture in showcasing family-friendly, delicious, vegan meals.  The bakery is named in honor of Jones' grandmother, who the entrepreneur credits with helping her bake her first pie. The business offers four variations of vegan pound cake: red velvet, lemon, chocolate turtle, and strawberry crunch.
