Paving Pathways to Financial Independence for Youth

Dr. Nikia Owens, President and CEO of Campaign for Working Families

As of July 2023, over half of young Americans between 16 and 24 years of age were working, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. With so many young workers in the country, the Campaign for Working Families (CWF) asks a critical question: When tax time rolls around, how many of these young workers will take the step to file their taxes and get their refunds?

CWF’s mission is to help young people learn how to handle their taxes. By doing this, CWF is not just helping them get their money back; we are teaching them how to be in charge of their own money. This is important because it can change how they see the IRS and teach them about managing their finances as they start their careers.

Further, CWF understands that many people, especially people of color, often do not see the IRS in a positive light. We want to change that by making sure young people’s first experiences with the IRS are good ones. This can lead to a better relationship with the IRS in the long run.

To connect with young people, CWF teamed up with Power 99 FM for the 40th annual PowerHouse Show, featuring stars like Meek Mill and Lil Uzi Vert. At the concert, CWF set up a booth to talk to young people about taxes, volunteer work, and job opportunities that CWF offers.

Sponsoring the PowerHouse was strategic and intentional to focus on young people who are the target audience. Because CWF is all about empowering the youth, we guide them as they make important choices that will prepare them for a successful future, whether through education or learning a trade.

In short, CWF’s vision is to help young Americans become confident and knowledgeable about their finances. We believe that by being a part of events young people care about and offering them the tools they need, we are helping to build a stronger, more financially savvy future for everyone.
