Since the late 1970s, hip-hop has played a vital role in fostering creativity and expression worldwide. Hip-hop has been a platform for artists in East Africa to share stories, express their emotions, and create impactful messages. "East African hip hop" is a genre of music that developed in East Africa in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It is a fusion of traditional African music, Western pop, and hip-hop. Since then, East African hip hop has gained popularity, with artists from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi contributing to it.

 

Founded in 1992, Kalamashaka is a renowned hip-hop duo from Kenya comprised of Othaniel "Otha" James and Clinton "Clint" deGraft. Their debut record, Nae Nae Kwanzaa (1996), turned out to be a defining milestone for the group and Kenyan hip-hop music, as it successfully propelled the careers of both Kalamashaka and several other Tanzanian rappers. 

Nonini is one of the most iconic rappers in East Africa, who has been a major force in the industry since the early 2000s. With his unique style and flow, he has cultivated a loyal following in Kenya and the region as one of the best rappers. "Niko Kwaheri" and "Mambo Bado" are among Nonini's greatest hits.

Wyre the Lovechild was a hit sensation during the early 2000s in East Africa. Born to a Kenyan father and a Ugandan mother, his sound was a mix of hip-hop, R&B, and reggae. He was known for his addictive hooks and sing-along songs. In 2006, Wyre earned international recognition when he collaborated with Snoop Dogg on their joint track "Eastside." Although he passed away at a young age in 2007, his influence lives on through his music. Wyre's death was a heartbreaking blow to the East African music space, but his memory will continue to be cherished.

Jua Cali's unique rapping style combines traditional Kenyan music with modern hip-hop, making him one of the best-known rappers in East Africa. He has put East Africa on the map in the hip-hop world. In addition to releasing several albums and singles, Jua Cali is also a member of the famous East African hip-hop group Camp Mulla.
