The early observances of Juneteenth can be traced back to 1866, initially taking place in Texas as community gatherings focusing on the church. These celebrations gradually spread throughout the Southern states and gained more commercial aspects in the 1920s and 1930s, often centering around a food festival. As the Great Migration occurred, participants brought the tradition to other parts of the country. However, during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, Juneteenth celebrations were overshadowed by the nonviolent struggle for civil rights. Nevertheless, they regained popularity in the 1970s, emphasizing African American freedom and the arts.

Juneteenth's recognition as a holiday started in Texas with a proclamation in 1938 and later through legislation in 1979. Since then, every U.S. state and the District of Columbia have officially acknowledged the holiday. Additionally, the Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles who escaped from slavery in 1852 and settled in Coahuila, Mexico, celebrate Juneteenth.

Typical Juneteenth traditions involve:
